melatonin and constipation

Has anyone observed constipation with Melatonin? My son has been

taking Melatonin 3 mg capsule every night (for a few weeks).

In the beginning, it did not cause constipation. Also in the

beginning, it made him wake up so much easier in the morning - kind of

opposite of what I thought would happen. Now though, he is back to

being difficult to get out of bed in the morning. In the beginning,

Melatonin also seemed to bring a happiness effect. It would probably

continue if not for the current constipation.

Thanks

We haven't seen that. Could he be having a yeast flare up at the same

time? I know when yeast flares up we have a hard time waking too and

the constipation returns. My daughter has been on melatonin since May

and it has not affected her bowels. It sounds like yeast.

I beg to differ. My son takes melatonin every night or he would

never sleep. We are trying to identify some of our issues now but

for us its been at least 1-2yrs on it daily and he does fine and he

has not ever not fallen asleep. His motor would run on forever like

the energizer bunny! He will wake and we will tell him to go back

to sleep and he does. We do have issues with him sleeping in his

own bed. He the melatonin works for us.

April.

I know it is the same thing your body makes. In some of us this is

deficient due to other health problems. So we need to supplement it.

But we are on 6 months with the same doses and my dtr takes it every

night. The rest of us use it as needed. I think that dosing may have

to do more with body weight and how little natural melatonin your

body is making. Perhaps that is why some need more than others, or

their doses increase with time.

-Just a thought, but really check there is no lactose in the

melatonin as we had terrible problems with an NHS brand one for

years and even the phamacist did not know that the manufacturer was

half filling it with lactose!!
