magnesium citrate vs. miralax

I was just told by my sons nephrologist that his xray shows that he entestines

are full of fecal

matter and to start him on miralax to encourage daily BMs.

His Wellness doctor (MD with Autistic son), said keep it simple, give him

Magnesium citrate

and ask the pharmacist for the dose appropriate to clear out sufficiently for a

scope.

Afterwards give him metamucil cookies and lots of water along with digestive

enzymes.

I was wondering if anyone had opinions on Magnesium Citrate. It looks like

Miralax is not

recommended.

Thanks!

Oh God, not miralax.

This stuff is polyethylene glycol.

I would go with the wellness doc on this one. Mag citrate will not

hurt him. It is natural and likely he needs magnesium anyway. Most

kids do. The metamucil cookies are ok. We give probiotics, yeast

treatment, ground flaxseed each day..even juice is better than

miralax. If our son does not stay on probiotics, yeast treatment

etc, the constipation returns.

Before I used miralax if you are in a dire pinch, babylax enemas

work quickly.

Several families on this list have had kids have horrible reactions to Miralax.

I would avoid it.

Magnesium citrate is what worked in our home. I don't know the state

of my son's intestines, though. He was passing large, bulky stools

about every 3-5 days (with difficulty). I would occasionally have to

use a Fleet enema if 5+ days had gone by and he looked distressed.

One time the poop was as big (and round) as a softball!

We gave Miralax to our daughter when she was almost 3 years old. She

had the same issue as my son, but it was self-induced: witholding

because we were toilet training and she was fighting sitting on the

potty. Used for a few days, Miralax was GREAT at accomplishing our

goal of getting our child potty trained (her urge to go was too great

to fight). Looking back, I wish I would have known about mag citrate

at the time (pre-Autism)... Miralax caused diarrhea and discomfort,

too.

Miralax is totally abused; even by professionals. My general

practioner has been giving it to her daughter daily for a few years

and thinks nothing of why she still needs it... it is a short term

remedy and DEFINITELY not a remedy for all types of constipation or

for most kids on the spectrum due to leaky gut and other issues.

If your son's stools are bulky, perhaps you could try Houston

Nutraceuticals No Fenol. It also worked very, very well with my son.

Make sure he take lots of water.

Magnesium citrate works by taking water from the

body and drawing it into the intestines. This could make

him very dehydrated especially in the summer.
