Guest guest Posted September 1, 2004 Report Share Posted September 1, 2004 Fran and all I understand that the Inflammatory Bowel thing is related to having any autoimmune disease-whether PA, Fibro, RA, etc. Many of us seem to have it. Also, my rheumy says there is a strong relationship between the GI problems and spinal involvement-even more so in people with AS. We went to his PCP dr today & she told me to schedule him to go to Children's Hospital for testing. When he was born he used to projectile vomit & so he was placed on Tagament. He hasn't had any fevers with this,headaches, or stomach pains..nothing. His dad has this problem also.The PCP dr wants a scope done. We go on the 7th to see the GI Dr. He has been doing this more & more lately. It's been an ongoing thing for about a year but now it's everyday. I was giving him Prilosec OTC for the past few months but it's gotten serious. His mom has Gardener's Disease (sp) & when I mentioned that his PCP dr said maybe they may do an endoscopy & a colonoscopy. The school nurse just sent me home a kind of nasty letter about Jon throwing up...that these episodes are affecting his time in school & she said they were self Induced! I wrote back that I know for a fact he doesn't do that & that he has a habit appliance connected to his new braces that collects food & stuff & that he needs to push it all out of there so maybe it appeared to her that was what he was doing self inducing. Guest guest Posted November 30, 2006 Report Share Posted November 30, 2006 I know what you are going through.... My 13 yo has GI Issues, except his are encopresis/stool retention. He is having to go to the bathroom so much since hitting puberty about 10 months ago, that even with a note from his doctor, the school system got nasty with me, and he's now homeschooled for the first time in his life. They even " timed " him and proceeded to advise me of how many hours he was spending in the restroom, and that it was taking away from his school time. He has had cleaning out with Mag Citrate, mineral oil, enemas, etc. He had xrays. They showed fecal retention. He has had an Sigmoidoscopy. His poop problems continue. We have to have adult underwear for him now. He gained 60 lbs in 13 months on Abilify, and now has to be on Linasipril for hypertension. We just started Depakote to see if that helps with the autism/bipolar/OCD issues, since typical anti-psychotics are now starting to show the long term side effects. He has never had these GI problems until entering puberty and gaining all this weight. It really gets to us, we are sick of it. (sorry, but its really frustrating seeing this regression in the hygiene and it effects the whole family) And just being out of the school system for the first time, is hard. Its hard work homeschooling and working full time. We do have him in a Virtual Academy (its a public online school) with OT and Speech Services coming......but its still so different than a brick and mortar school. I work for a GI doc, (along with a Cardiologist) and I can't tell you to get a scope, but atleast maybe talk with the specialist and get their opinion. You're going in the right direction. During one of my intake sessions with Dr. Babette Wechsler, who was extremely thorough in asking about medical history, asked if I had a problem with diarrhea. I didn't pay it much attention at the time since I was still stunned with the development. However, I said " no " but did often have loose stools --- which I attributed to being an over-eater of vegetables and salads, (avoiding carbos -- anything white like bread, potatoe, rice, noodles, etc.) -- Check here if your doctor has any dietary input #1 . Now, another of my weird eating habits, which has actually become a standing joke in the family -- I used to eat a pint of ice cream every day -- for breakfast with my morning coffee if a weekend or holiday (which is why it's a family and extended family joke because coming from a large Polish family there are now about 150 Polish cousins' children saying " If Aunt Geraldine can have ice cream for breakfast why can't I? " During the work week, I always had a pint of ice cream for lunch. Lately this has become a problem. To your point, perhaps. Recently, I noticed that I have been getting stomach pains and severe diarrhea about 1 - 1/2 hours after the ice cream. This could be an age change rather than the CLL, but: Check #2 -- possibly developing lactose intolerance Maybe check with your nutritionist ??? I have complained to my primary, my gastroenterolgist and my oncologist no one has any suggestions. The GI doctor prescribed hyoscyamine 0.375mg but I haven!t noticed any difference.
