Guest guest Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 Hi, my name is Angelina. My DH Dan and I have a 5 yo DS named Sage. We live in NJ. DS was referred by his old school to the child psych outpatient because he was running around the classroom and the hallways, hitting the other kids, and not listening to the teacher. The child psychcologist diagnosed him with PDD (most likely Asperger's). She said that she wanted the Child Study Team from Specialized Hospital to diagnose AS because they have more experience. The child psych also said that DS exhibited ADHD (?) symptoms. Then she started talking about meds that can help... I must've looked like I was on overload because she reassured me that he has a " mild " case of AS. I moved across town so I had to switch him to another school. So far, the classroom is a better match. He was placed in an intergrated classroom because it had the most room. I noticed right away that the smaller class size made a huge difference. DS also gets along with his new teacher much better. At his old school his teacher brought in an OT to help him with his handwriting- he had trouble holding a pencil. So now I'm requesting his new school to give him an OT. The school told me that they have to wait for his old school to fwd his records. They should have gotten his records by now because they have to send it within two weeks. I'm new at all of this. What else should I request? Do they need a diagnosis before they give DS services? I'm also looking putting DS into a social skills group like the psych suggested- can you tell me what do they do in a social skills group? Thanks for reading, Angelina Quote
Guest guest Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 No, they don't need a dx to provide services. Services are based on need. I can't imagine why the records would take that long to send over either. Maybe you should call and find out where the hold up is at? Social skill groups should work on social skills - how to talk to other people, how to play with other kids, manners, friendships, etc. Roxanna ( ) Intro (long) Hi, my name is Angelina.
