Guest guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I would have to agree with an IEP now. Just to ensure she continues to get the support she needs. The IEP can be changed at anytime, and will be reviewed and updated as needed. it's great she's doing fine now, but sadly, you may not always have the good fortune with the teachers/administration that you do now. Sounds like her case manager is an excellent advocate. Theresa > > Seems like a funny question, I know but... Guest guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 does she have no needs at all at this time? academically, socially, developmentally, fine motor, ot/gross motor, or speech? Pam Quote
Guest guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I agree. You may have a great situation now, because the teachers understand your child and the they don't expect as much out of kids in preschool. You may find a completely different situation when you get to the next school. For example, not being able to sit still in preschool is pretty NT. Not being able to sit still in a strict teacher's 1st grade class is a problem. Think of the IEP as insurance. My son didn't have problems in school until he got to first grade in public school. I think the biggest reason he didn't have problems in Kindergarten is because he went to a small private all day kindergarten in the same school he had gone to preschool since he was 3. There was really no adjustment for him involved in going to Kindergarten. And he had a patient teacher that saw him as NT for his age. First grade. Public school. Whoa. For the first time ever he rode the bus, had to remember his lunch box, had a strict teacher who expeceted NT behavior out of every kid, or she considered them a behavior problem. Had to transition to before & after school. He was overwhelmed. We didn't get a diagnosis for him until mid 2nd grade. Fortunately I had a wonderfully understanding & patient teacher in 2nd grade. Had we had a diagnosis, and an IEP in place for my son in first grade, he would have had a much smoother year. I think it took a toll on his self-esteem (and ours!) to be considered a behavior problem in first grade, because his teacher didn't understand him. An IEP will ensure your child's rights to a free, appropriate education. It's purpose is to set measurable goals for your child that the school HAS to meet. Does your state offer free training on Special Education law and writing an IEP? I think this is something the federal government requires in all states. It helped me a lot because the whole process of writing an IEP for the first time is pretty overwhelming. Ask your advocate if she is aware of any training for parents. It could really help you to make your decision. > > > > Seems like a funny question, I know but... Where is the advocate from, school? Sorry, I'm a new-ish lurker but we're in a similar situation as the original poster of this thread. Miranda (13) ny (11) R.J. Guest guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I'm in Minnesota, Pam. We're going to have to make our first IEP this year and I really don't know where to start. I've read some websites on them, but wow, sometimes I think you need a PHD to understand the whole process, lol. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Miranda (13) ny (11) R.J. Guest guest Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Thanks! She really is great and has been great in the past too. I actually went ahead and set up plans for the IEP since she started having problems soon as the one teacher left to go back to school. Maybe I should have done it sooner but oh well, live and learn, I'm not perfect ya know LOL =^..^= Marie Make some easy money, the fun way! http://www.be-paid.com/pages/index.php?refid=surveys4bmh http://www.cassandrasclicks.com/pages/index.php?refid=surveys4bmh I HAVE been paid by both! Guest guest Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 if she has any issues, that is what the current IEP should be based upon. Pam Quote
Guest guest Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 My dd has social needs more than anything but she also has some mental issues ie hiding under tables when there's a loud noise, refusing to potty, etc. I am lucky in that my case manager will go to the IEP meeting with me to ensure that everything is done properly and that I understand everything that takes place. Thanks again! =^..^= Marie Make some easy money, the fun way! http://www.be-paid.com/pages/index.php?refid=surveys4bmh http://www.cassandrasclicks.com/pages/index.php?refid=surveys4bmh I HAVE been paid by both! Guest guest Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Aw hon, we're all learning. That's why we're here If I had a dollar for every time I realized I should have done something sooner, I'd be sitting on my own private beach right now lol > > Thanks! Guest guest Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Having an IEP shouldn't be a choice but rather a need. Is your child behind anywhere? When you pull up a list of things that same aged peers are expected to be doing, is she doing those things? If so, then she doesn't need an IEP. Even if you ask for one and she doesn't need one, you won't get one. That is because an IEP is based on need and not dx. If you find that she is behind in some areas, then yes, I would definitely ask for an IEP. And it's not a silly question to ask either! It's a good question! Roxanna ( ) IEP or not? Seems like a funny question, I know but... My daughter is only in preschool and our therapeutic case manager wants me to get an IEP in place for her already. I just don't think it makes sense. Guest guest Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 IF you find that there are things the teachers are doing this year that are making everything work for her so that everything is 'just fine' then get an IEP that makes the teachers do the same things. Talk to her current teachers, even though she is doing fine, and ask them if there are any times when they handle things differently for her or maybe break a lesson down differently for her. If there is - that method is what you want in her IEP. If she is doing fine and they never half to do anything different for her than the rest of the class - I don't know what you would put in the IEP.
