Guest guest
My son is 13 years old and recently diagnosed with Aspergers. He has had difficulty ever since he started school. He now has melt downs at random. Usually he gets upset after performing poorly at whatever he tries to do. The most recent recent one happened at a wrestling tournament. He lost twice to the same boy. The first time he was not that upset, but after the second loss, I had to restrain him so that he wouldn't hurt himself. Several people stared, and someone even thought I was trying to choke him. Is there anyone who has had anything that worked ? I am getting frustrated with my inability to help my son. He is taking 40 mg of strattera once a day. Does anybody else have anything similar? p.s. My son has also been diagnosed ADHD and a generalized anxiety disorder. Guest guest
Yes I do except my son is only 6 and he tends to have anger fits and trys to hurt himself when he gets mad. My son was also on straterra but it only worked for him for about 4-5 months then we had to go to concerta yes it is a narcotic but it works it tends to calm him down very well but then around 4 p.m. it starts to wear off and he slowly starts coming down off of it. some days are better than others I have basically had to ry to channel his anger in different places say for example my son gets mad and starts smacking himself in the face I have found get them out of the situation that set them off to begin with, then calmly look them in the eyes and talk very calmly and quietly the quiet is so they have to pay attention you may have to get a little firm at first if you cannot get him to calm down enough to hear you then simply say ok I understand that you are upset, but is getting upset going to change the outcome (of the problem). This will make him have to stop and think about what it is that is happening and make him realize that he has gotten too upset, he may or may not realize his actions at the time they happen that is why you will be pointing them out to him to make him aware. Now will he remember next time probably not but he will eventually start to realize he needs to calm down before he gets to that point. crystal kneeleee@... wrote: In a message dated 1/24/2006 10:01:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, scamp238@... writes: My son is 13 years old and recently diagnosed with Aspergers.
