I got my son a Sphynx kitten. They're hairless so no fur everywhere, soft as can

be, and the most affectionate, loving, best little kitten I've ever had!

I would say that depends on how she handles pets/animal. At that age often

kids don't understand how hard to squeeze/hug them, so you might need one

that can handle 'rough love'. She is wants something to cuddle and hug a

lot - I would think a hamster would not be good. For cats you have to

consider if you want it inside all the time and where to put the little box

and cleaning it. The reason I say inside all the time is that these kids

don't accept change well, so you wouldn't want the cat to not come home one

day. I would say an older rescue animal that is used to kids might be good

too, kittens and puppies can get a little rough themselves (kittens can get

rough with their claws and climb up your back or sharpen on your nice couch

- while puppies go through that teething thing on everything - incl fingers,

toes, furniture..). While a slightly older cat, or dog might have a better

temperament for her. (and add less chaos to your house) IF she is a real

squeezer when she hugs, you might want a bigger dog, that can take a hard

squeeze (they also use the big dogs and teach a 'deep hug' to autistic kids

to help calm, they squeeze the dog when they are feeling frustrated

-instead of melting down) Whether you are interested in a dog or cat, puppy

or kitten, to see what breed you are interested in talk to Cat Rescue - if

you are interested in cats - they can help you figure out the breed with the

best traits, or they might have a cat or kitten that is good with kids, For

dogs - narrow down some breeds you are interested in, then contact the breed

clubs for that breed or breed rescue for that breed, they can tell you more

about that breed, to help you decide if that would be the breed for your

house. Often we see dogs/ cats on TV that are not accurate portrayals of

what they would be like in our home.

You are doing good to consider different animals, but there is a lot to

consider in finding the one that is best for you.

I probably was not much help - hope I didn't raise too many questions.

Hey, first of all, animal therapy works. My boy loves our pet rats, but

he can't hold them on his own, because he is too strong for them and

doesn't know his own strength. I suggest a kitten or puppy. If they are

brought up with the child, then they are more likely to put up with

what ever dragging around they get. There are several good breeds of

dog for a companion animal. I would suggest seeing about a trained

companion dog if possible, but a well bred Golden Retriever is good

too. Another dog that loves being handled but can be loud if kept

outside too much is the Basset hound. An excellent family dog in my

opinion though it needs alot of exercise is the Welsh Corgi. Shoot me

some questions about dogs if you like, I worked in Animal Control for

six years. Best of luck to you.

Hello Dave,

I'm not the person that asked the question but read that you know alot about

dogs. If you don't mind, I wanted to ask you: How big does a coonhound get? I

think he might be mixed with a bassett hound, maybe. I was told he might be a

coonhound mix.

I know you were asking Dave, but my husband shows coonhounds, and we have

rescued some, and done a lot of education on them.

We have a smaller female – she is about 40lbs. but some of the males are

60. They are not thick dogs, longer legs for running, so they can get

fairly tall. IF you are considering a coonhound or coonhound mix – the are

great with kids and family – HOWEVER – do you live in town?? Do you intend

to keep the dog outside? If so your neighbors might not be very fond of you

after a while. Overall, coonhounds are active dogs (they are bred to hunt

and run) they will often bay and howl if bored. They follow their nose –

not a good off lead dog. IF you want to know more, I can email you a GREAT

article on figuring out if a coonhound is for you. They are nice dogs, and

if you are looking for a pet one – not a hinting one – you would pick it out

differently. IF you want a pet hound and you are looking at the litter –

you want the one that stays with the pack, the last to venture out and the

one that does not have it’s nose to the ground as much. If you are hunting

one – you want the one that venture’s the farthest, with its nose to the

ground, the most confident.

I don’t have the experience that Dave has probably, but have worked with

some shelters and volunteered with animal rescue for over 7-8 years. While

I work with breed rescue – we do a lot of evaluations and a lot of education

on picking the right dog for your family, - checking breed – temperament –

etc. I have a rescue dog that came into my house as 1.5yrs, she is better

with kids than any dog I could have raised from a pup, and she never chewed

anything. I have fostered dogs of different ages and puppies – I have to

say, IMHO I don’t want a pup ever, short term OK, but not to long term. LOL

They can run from $750 to $1500 but so well worth it. Depending on where you

live it may need to be shipped which can run from $150-200. They are strictly

indoor cats because they easily sunburn and can get cold. Some breeders give

them to you nuetured which will save you a few hundred. They don't let you have

them unil they are 12-14 weeks. If cost is an issue, many breeders will sell

much cheaper or even give away their older ones that are done breeding. I know a

breeder in San Diego who is looking for a home for her female for $350. Her

email is: barebods@... She's one that sells the kittens for $1500 so you

might be able to get one cheaper somewhere else. Just look online. They do

require more care than a furry cat though. But my son loves to help take care of

him so it's good for him. They need to be bathed once a week, ears cleaned,

nails trimmed. But they get used to having it done and it's easy once you get

the hang of it. Plus if you get an older one they'll be

very used to it. My kitten tended to scratch during bathing quite a bit in the

begining but not anymore. www.furlessfelines.com has good information about

them. Feel free to ask me questions though. I just love this kitten so much, I

can't say enough of the love he gives us. He'll greet you at the door like a

dog. You can even teach them to fetch!

We just recently got our son a fox terrier puppy. A little girl pup named

Molly. She was the runt of her litter and Isaac is in love with her. He is so

gentle with her and he is using a lot more language with her than he would

normally with a friend. It is cute too when I hear him saying " sit " . The funny

thing is that he waits until she is sitting and then he says " sit! good girl

Molly dog " And if she lays down he says " lay down, good girl Molly dog " It is

too cute.

We adopted a 5 year old Beagle from my friend who is

moving and our 7 year old AS son, , couldn't be

happier. Of all 4 of my kids, he is the one most

involved w/her. He takes her out for walks and the

bathroom, gives her treats, tells her to roll over,

etc, it seems to be very theraputic sp? for him and

teaches him responsibility (he gets an allowance for

taking her out). Only problem is he lacks the patience

to wait while she's doing her business, so it

frustrates him. But other than that, he loves her

sleeping on his bed and stuff.

Rose, You have a very good answer already posted so I won't need to add

much here. If it is a mix, then that may have some affect on how it

acts, but beware the out doors behavior. Hounds of all types can be

loud howlers and can bay relentlessly. It's not a guarantee but it can

happen. The best way to keep that from happening is to be directly

invovled in their training and keep them busy. A great place to check

out is http://www.leerburg.com great training articles for all types

of dogs. I have sent many an owner of troubled dogs there for

additional training advice. Let me know if you need to research done,

and I can get pretty much what ever info you want. I would look to our

friend here regarding the coonhound info. If you can email me a photo I

might be able to guess at the mix. Thanks for the answer, sorry I

didn't remember your name and deleted the excess for my answer. Ugh.

with my 2 year old son we decided to get him a dog. we went to the pound and

found a little mutt already 2 years old and we did to him all the things a small

child would do such as mess with his food while he is eating, pull his fur, pull

his tail and he did great we gave to AJ for his birthday and he loves him his

chores are to open the backdoor and let him out in the yard and to help feed him

he talks to him plays with him Todo seems to have given me the key to open the

door to my little boy's happiness

Well, we adopted a little kitten and she loves him. I am teaching

her to be gentle, but that little kitten is so patient with her, I am

amazed. He's all she talks about. And what makes him even more

special is that he is a special needs kitty himself. He was born with

a broken tail and and broken leg. It's as if they were meant for each

other.. thanks for all the suggestions and comments, they really did

help.

I think maybe a dog, who is older, because they're calm and predictable -- my

7-year-old aspie loves the cats we got but stays away from them much of the time

becuase they've been too unpredictable, partly because my 5-year old NT was wild

with them and they scratched at first. Or he'll work to make them comfy in his

bed with them and then they'll get up and go, as cats tend to do. I want to get

a dog.
