Guest guest Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Jake (11 yrs old), had a hard time with pills till he figured out his " own " method. He gets a mouthfull of water, tilts his head back, and I drop the pills in, and he swallows.......strange, but it works. Still can't tie his shoes though. Putting on socks is a 5-15 minute ritual, if I can get him to wear them at all. Theresa Quote
Guest guest Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 ~My 8yo son will only swallow pills...taking anything he has to drink is more of a battle. Never had a problem when he was little getting him to swallow liquids then one day at about 4yo it all changed...very dramatically. He decided after being prescribed liquid antibiotics, one's he'd had a few times before, that he would no longer be willing to drink any meds. I say it like that because it was our very 1st round of negotiation talks in many negotiations since then. He didn't know how to tell us what he wanted to do...so after realizing that to even get 3 doses a day in him it would be a physical battle each & every time...I explained to my son that if he wouldn't drink it it would have to be in a shot. Knowing my son hates getting shots I thought I could at least get this perscription finished & then figure out what was going on with him when he was better. He actually chose to get the shots...I was amazed because it was " his " choice & I could see it. He gets a look in his eyes...when something fits together for him. He bravely got his shots...something I'd never seen him do & stuck to his word about no more liquids. The next time he needed to take a med we talked about it when filling the prescription & I asked what he wanted...liquid to drink or pills to swallow. He has never had a problem...in fact sometimes he drinks so little water it makes me gag. He does things dramatically, always has...sometimes it takes sharing it with someone else to see how spectacular it was...lol. I've realized I love having an Aspie because of his quirkiness sometimes...he's definately an individual...and I don't know if he'll ever learn to tie his shoes... ~~ Quote

I take a drink, hold it in my mouth and put my head back, put the pills in and take another swallow. That's kind of funny. I don't like taking pills or wearing shoes so I guess Jake and I have a lot in common. Amber Quote
Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Put the pill on the tip of your tongue and take a drink with a straw. I learned this out of ATTITUDE magazine and it works everytime with my 7 yr old nephew! Guest guest Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 First of all, let's talk about the pill swallowing. I could never swallow pills until I was 19 years old and my boyfriend didn't believe me, he never heard of anyone not being able to swallow a pill. As I was proving it to him, I put a pill in my mouth and SWALLOWED IT!!!...Un believable...BTW that boyfriend is now my DH. As for the tying of the shoes and noseblowing, I always thought that it was my kids' Muscular Dystrophy that was hindering my son from doing those things...I never thought that it could be the Asperger aspect. P.S. What is B and N? > > Reading some of the other posts about not being able to blow noses, > and tie shoes I was just curious if the other aspies out there had a > hard time learning to swallow pills? Guest guest Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 ---B and N are my twins n and Noah ! apparently nose blowing, tying shoes, and swallowing pills *may* be an asperger thing. Sure looks like it is common... Toni In , " Sandy " <sandy1122@...> wrote: > > First of all, let's talk about the pill swallowing. Guest guest Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 My 8yo HFA son can swallow pills and blow his nose but can barely tie his shoes. > > Reading some of the other posts about not being able to blow noses, > and tie shoes I was just curious if the other aspies out there had a > hard time learning to swallow pills? Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 If it's small enough, CJ can swallow it. He's 8. I have to break his dextroamphetamine into 1/4's, yet he was able to take a melatonin, which was just slightly smaller. I had a very hard time swallowing some pills as a kid and a teen, and even into my 20's. I know my son's problem stems from his dysphagia. Maybe mine did, too. Debbie Quote
Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 LOL. My hubby (38) does the same thing - mouthful of water, head back, & he drops them in. Guest guest Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 My son can swallow all 5 pills in the morning without liquid. He then takes a drink but not always a need for the drink I don't know how he does it. Has always kind of packed food in though and a lot of times I'm not sure he chewed it prior to swallowing. Some of my NT kids though had a horrible time with pills. Suzanne -- ( ) Can your kids swallow pills? Guest guest Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 My AS son had a horrid time taking liquid meds...he HATE the taste of the meds. (Even the pink amoxicillan!) so it didn't take long for him to start swallowing pills whole, knowing that he wouldn't have to taste the med at all when he did! Guest guest Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 My son can handle two pills at a time. However we started with liquid, because he was having the hardest time swalling pills. It wasn't until he go the statera and it didn't come in liquid, that we had no choice and he stated taking pills. But there are times I really wish for the liquid. Leanne R.
