I'm not sure because both my boys do that and only my youngest is an Aspie.

My oldest does tend to do it more often though and he's 14, so maybe it's a

boy thing or an age thing due to growth spurts. Has your son always done

that or is it just more recently as he's getting older?

My son has always been a messy eater, he shovels food down so fast it's

amazing that he doesn't choke. He piles it on his spoon or fork and is

putting more

in his mouth before he's even done swallowing the first bite. I have to cut

his meat for him...and he's almost 12...if I don't he just picks it up and

chews it off.

He's always hungry and he always finishes seconds before the rest of us have

finished the first serving, and then he wonders why his stomach hurts.

His place setting is a huge mess, of course, crumbs all over the place,

stains and spills, and no matter how often he's reminded, he eats like a pig

Is this an Aspie thing, or just a boy thing?

Hi

I have a 13 year old aspie boy - who eats the same as your son. I constantly

threaten to get a mirror so he can watch himself eat. I think I need to

actually do it. We're having the same situation...so, my guess is, its the

combination of age, boy and aspie.

One thing I have noticed is that if there is nothing going on (no activities

to go to or tv on), or no video game he wants to get to...he eats more

slowly....coincidence?

My 8yo son is the same way with eating. He eats more than anyone

else. It is nothing for him to eat 5-6 bowls of cereal in the morning

for breakfast. He eats so much, yet he only weighs 54 lbs. He is so

skinny.

Anyways, he not only eats alot, but is messier than a 2 year old.

Until he was about 6 I would put a bath towel under his chair. The

last couple years he has gotten better. He is not as messy(most of it

stays on the counter and doesn't make it to the floor) -- we don't

use the towel anymore!!!

Is he on medicine? Certain medicines will do this.

It has nothing to do with medicine, he's not on anything, but he's always

been like this, just shovels in and makes a mess. He eats pretty much anything,

unlike his NT sister, whose diet consists of peanut butter and jelly, macaroni

and cheese, cereal, and of course pizza and hot dogs. But at least she's neat

and has good manners.

My son is younger ( 4 1/2), but he always ate more than my husband or I did

until we

started him on digestive enzymes. About a month after beginning them, he had an

appetite that was more appropriate for his age.

My son also is a sloppy eater. And he puts way way to much in his

mouth. I am not sure how he doesn't choke. He pours milk in even when

his mouth is full of food and the milk runs out his mouth.

Constant reminders help but don't really sink in for the next meal. He

eats like he has to get more before someone else does. I just don't

want him to be a slob!

I know his medicine (Risperdal) can cause increased appetite and that

is something being watched with my son right now. But is that was

causes him to shovel it in?

My 14-year old eats like that. It's so embarrassing. I

don't think he does it when he's out at other people's

houses. But it's awful here. Especially spaghetti and

macaroni and cheese! Sometimes I think he'd do better

with a shovel instead of a fork and spoon! I keep on

him about it, but he doesn't seem to think anything

about it. He gets his face so close to the plate and

just shovels it all in! I haven't figured out how to

break him of the habit. Drives me nuts. He doesn't do

it with every food, but enough!

Ditto- mine too! He hates to use silverware. He says it is too cold! He always

has his meal all over his face. I have faith that one day he will be able to eat

properly.

My son doesn't over-eat or over-stuff his mouth, his difficulty is in

knowing where his body is in relation to his surroundings: What I

mean by this is, his plate is always off to the side instead of in

front of him and that is why he is a messy eater. No matter how many

times I remind him to bring the plate closer to the edge of the table

and in front of him, he seems surprised, " Oh! " (He is nearly 11).

My son does not use silverware either. I never really thought about the body

thing. I guess that is one of the reasons. He sits on his leg, elbows on table

and shovels the food in. I guess when you don't know where your body is in

space, having to sit properly and eat with silverware is very difficult for

them. Thanks - I did not think of this and it will help as I continue to " nag "

(as he says) him about proper table manners.

will be 15 this month. He eats like a hog. I'm serious! From the time

he comes home from school till he goes to bed. He eats like there's not

tomorrow. He eats with his mouth opened & chews very loudly. Sometimes food is

hanging out & he is trying to talk. He will growl & snort. What is that?? He ate

two muffins & walked outside to the car, threw up & kept walking & eating. That

is so disgusting. I had him tested for food allergies, had him get a endoscopy.

I think he throws up from eating like a hog. While he is eating he will be

looking at other's plates then looking to see if there will be left overs. Of

course we have to set limits or he'll eat us out of house & home. He eats with

his eyes closed head back like he is in ecstasy.

Take care,Betty

I really do think there is something to the link between ASD and how

many of the children eat: My daughter, who was severe, used to

overstuff her mouth and I was concerned because of the potential to

be a choking factor. My son, who is mild, seems to have issues with

spacial relationship (unaware of where his plate is positioned in

relation to his body) which cause him to be a messier eater. My 3

other children - NT - males, do not have these issues.

My AS son isn't a messy eater but he does eat very quickly. He also REALLY

enjoys his food. He makes all kinds of mmmmm noises especially when it is

something he really likes like kraft dinner. lol I have to remind him often not

to do that or to burp. He is always burping. I am not sure if it is because he

thinks it's funny or because he eats too fast.

Hmmm...sounds like my son, moreso when he was younger; he's 18 now.

He still eats fast like yours. And picks up his meat to bite it off,

not cut it.

But his eating area isn't so messy now! :) Used to be I expected

crumbs everywhere and wasn't surprised at a spilled drink.

Still a bit sloppy with an ice cream cone (gets on his face) so we

stick to cups of ice cream.

Things have greatly improved though, take hope! I did keep reminding

him over the years about manners and about how he should eat at

school/in front of others.

I think Christian must have difficulty reconizing where his plate is

in relation to his boday also. It is always off to he side a bit, or

pushed way back. Never right in from of him. He also can't seem to

sit on his chair straight, he is always turned to the side or else he

is standing up.

I always remind him to move his plate or sit down. He will usually

listen but even then after a few minutes it back the way it was.

I am just glad I don't have to keep a towel under his chair anymore

and that if I tell him to clean up his mess when done he will at

least try.

For medications he does take risperdal(2x/daily), depakote

(3x/daily), & focalin xr(2x/daily). I know the depakote and risperdal

can cause an increased appetite, but the focalin can cause a

decreased appetite so I think they pretty much cancel each other out.

Therefore I do not think his meds are the reason why eats so much.

Besides, it is not how much he eats that bothers me. It is the mess

that without a doubt follows the meal. I also have a 2yo and her

place is neater than his when done eating....

Oh well, it is the least of the problems. He has many more pressing

issues to worry about.

Hi,

I wonder whether it would help to camcord him eating his food?

Especially if you've got other " normal " eaters to show as well as a

comparison. He may not be aware of how sloppy he looks to others.

Then it all comes down to motivation - if he wants to make changes to

become more " acceptable " to friends/relatives etc, then he'll change

his ways. You could also try rewards of course but this is really

second best for this problem. If nothing works, there's probably not

much you can do except wait for him to change (sigh).

Keep going!

Best wishes,

Is it lack of coordination or what? My boys still can't cut meat up very

well by themselves and resort to cave man style and pick up their steak and

bite off instead of cutting it into pieces..Toni.

Does anyone have SPD or SID issues also? Sound like alot of that could be

factoring into the eating issues.

On the other end of the eating issues DD will not put a fork or spoon into her

mouth if it has anything dripping off the sides or bottom...fear of getting it

on her lips/ getting dirty....Yes she is DX SID/SPD :-)
