Guest guest
While getting a child on an " appropriate " diet, in terms of not actively aggravating any known intolerances is a good idea, if you use that as your baseline, it may only work for a couple of months. Before you know it, there are more and more foods they are intolerant to. Basically setting the child up to become intolerant to the foods you are allowing. While healing the gut is a drive for us parents, if it were my child, and let me tell you, my child was down to pork, chicken water and rice, with only salt and pepper to flavor, morning noon and night, I would begin enzymes first. Let the child acclimate to the enzymes, let some gut healing take place, and then once acclimated re-introduce supplements. You may find that the better breakdown, hence absorption of the food makes some of the supplements unnecessary. For us Super Nu Thera was no longer needed, which was nice. Plus with enzymes you may get a wider variety of foods tolerated, and I've never experienced with my son any more foods that need to be withheld. It's been an ever increasing variety of foods he can handle. Which again means better nutrition and fewer supplements. Good luck to you. P.S. If it were me, I'd keep the probiotics, just to help keep things moving along. We experienced some bowel disturbances while acclimating, and while the reasons for the disturbances were known to me prior to beginning, and they were brief, the probiotics helped my little guy not suffer discomfort needlessly for too long. help with " do-over " - long > (I am double posting this so if you read both message boards, sorry!) > > Okay. Yes, I would definitely recommend you do this. > pull ALL supps for the week (should I keep Yeast-Aid and/or ProBio > Gold?), I would pull ALL of them. If you notice yeast coming back, then you can add one of the probiotics before a week goes by. My son did not tolerate probiotics, so start with just adding one thing, wait a few days, then add the other one. >>how often I should introduce them. Long enough that you have noticed whether the previous one was helpful or caused problems. Maybe 2-3 days at the soonest. >>Oh yes, he has even developed a > new stimm in the last 10 weeks, turning a toy car over and over as > fast as he can in his hands. Is this like he is rubbing it with his hands? That might be a sign of vitamin B toxicity, so when you add the vitamin B, start very slowly and work up. > ProBio Gold- 1 daily > Yeast-Aid- 2 daily (I just started this tonight. > He just Aqua Flora- 1 TBS daily yesterday. > Zinc- Kirkman liquid 30 mg at bedtime > Cod Liver Oil- Kirkmans (1250IU Vit A 135 IU Vit D) 2 times daily > (He took Nortic Naturals at first, wouldnt take other > supps when I would give it to him, so we DC'd) > Pro EPA- Nordic Naturals- 1 daily > Nu-Thera- Kirkmans- 2 daily (2 capsuls contain: Vit C 60 mg; Vit > B1 7.5 mg; Vit B2 7.5 mg; Niacinamide 20 mg; Vit B12 10 > mcg; Pantothenic Acid 10 mg; Vit E 30 IU; Folic Acid 400 > mcg; Biotin 200 mcg; Magnesium 100 mg; Zinc 10 mg; > Manganese 1500 mcg; Selenium 25 mcg; P-5-P 50mg) > Citramin II- Thorne Research- 3 daily (3 capsules contain: Calcium > 300 mg; Iodine 120 mcg; Magnesium 270 mg; Zinc 21 mg; > Selenium 150 mcg; Manganese 6 mg; Chromium 200 mcg; > Molybdenum 90 mcg; Potassium 90 mg; Boron 3 mg; Vanadium > 90 mcg) > Calcium- Kirkmans- 2 daily- (2 capsules contain: Calcium 400mg; Vit > D 160 IU) > Vitamin C- Kirkmans 2 daily total of 500 mg > Vitamin B12 Injections- 1000 mcg twice weekly > Folacal- Thorne Research- 1 daily 800 mcg As a general comment, it does appear like you might need to add more magnesium. You are also giving quite a lot of zinc, which can be a good thing depending on the child, but can cause problems also. > I gave him a Peptizyde capsule with his lunch today (first one he's > had) since I knew it had corn in it. I don't think Peptizyde helps much with corn, I would think you would want to use Zyme Prime for that, but my son did not tolerate corn even with all three enzymes, so maybe someone else can let you know which one might help with corn. Guest guest
My advice from traveling this road for many years - slow down, take a deep breath and realize that you don't have to do everything at once. I think that has been the biggest mistake I have made over the years. I was so anxious to help that I rushed into many things at one time. We just recently started over at square one and are taking things very slowly. The good news is that doing this is giving us some positive results. We did stop all supplements and started with enzymes. I plan to add things one at a time if I feel she needs them. The only way to really know what is working is to add them one at time so you can judge the reactions. I say this because I am the number one champion of jumping in with a bunch of stuff and then having no idea what is helping or what is hurting. I understand so well your drive to help and your impatience with not seeing more results sooner. Be patient and give yourself a break. This is the queen of impatient speaking here so I know where you are coming from. Your child is young and you have started early which is a very positive thing, so take it a day at a time and trust your instincts. Hang in there. help with " do-over " - long (I am double posting this so if you read both message boards, sorry!) Okay. My son Jaden, 2 years 8 months, unofficially ASD, has been gfcf for 10 weeks on Tuesday. He is non-verbal, off in his own world, has a few stimms, but isn't a behavoir problem, very few fits, etc. I have noticed some small improvement since the diet. More eye contact, responds to his name occasionally, but generally just more aware of his surroundings. I am frusterated at his lack of progress and feel there is more I should do, or something I am doing that is not working. I have decided to start a corn free trial this week (thank you for your responses in regards to that). But I am frusterated with his supplements. An idea came to me that I need your help with. This week I am going to pull ALL supplements and just do the diet. Then I will reintroduce supplements on a slower basis. My DAN! put us on diet and a lot of supps all at once. Then added some and changed some and I don't feel some are working right. So I need some help knowing if #1, this is a good idea and I should pull ALL supps for the week (should I keep Yeast-Aid and/or ProBio Gold?), and #2 what should I introduce first (what's most " important " ) and how often I should introduce them. I am not very patient and I want to be doing everything I can for him, but I have to figure out what is helping. Oh yes, he has even developed a new stimm in the last 10 weeks, turning a toy car over and over as fast as he can in his hands. So here goes. This is what I have right now... Zinc- Kirkman liquid 30 mg at bedtime Cod Liver Oil- Kirkmans (1250IU Vit A 135 IU Vit D) 2 times daily (He took Nortic Naturals at first, wouldnt take other supps when I would give it to him, so we DC'd) Pro EPA- Nordic Naturals- 1 daily Nu-Thera- Kirkmans- 2 daily (2 capsuls contain: Vit C 60 mg; Vit B1 7.5 mg; Vit B2 7.5 mg; Niacinamide 20 mg; Vit B12 10 mcg; Pantothenic Acid 10 mg; Vit E 30 IU; Folic Acid 400 mcg; Biotin 200 mcg; Magnesium 100 mg; Zinc 10 mg; Manganese 1500 mcg; Selenium 25 mcg; P-5-P 50mg) Citramin II- Thorne Research- 3 daily (3 capsules contain: Calcium 300 mg; Iodine 120 mcg; Magnesium 270 mg; Zinc 21 mg; Selenium 150 mcg; Manganese 6 mg; Chromium 200 mcg; Molybdenum 90 mcg; Potassium 90 mg; Boron 3 mg; Vanadium 90 mcg) Calcium- Kirkmans- 2 daily- (2 capsules contain: Calcium 400mg; Vit D 160 IU) Vitamin C- Kirkmans 2 daily total of 500 mg Vitamin B12 Injections- 1000 mcg twice weekly Folacal- Thorne Research- 1 daily 800 mcg I was supose to start TMG- Kirkmans 175 mg each capsule this week. I gave him a Peptizyde capsule with his lunch today (first one he's had) since I knew it had corn in it. Guest guest
Our first OT taught us about playing in our daughter's world instead of trying to bring her into ours (which slowly happened as a result)- at 20 months she was barely reachable. So we did what she did-lined toys up with her (then slowly moved them out of pattern), bought the items that went with her favorite tv shows or books, whatever would help bring us into the few things that were really important to her. We felt so much more connected to her plus it slowly gave more variety for her as she learned about some new toys (even if everything was Teletubbies) and brought things to us to play and show us (non-verbal at that point). You got some great advise on your questions. I just wanted to add because my daughter sounds a lot like your son at that time. Guest guest
> Our first OT taught us about playing in our daughter's world instead > of trying to bring her into ours (which slowly happened as a result)- > Great idea!! I guess in a small way I do this, I just haven't ever thought about it. I get a car when he has one and " drive " it over his arms and legs. He sometimes doesn't like it (usually) but I guess it will help him " play " . His teacher at early intervention follows him around until he stops to look at something. Then she grabs him and what ever he looked at and " plays " with him with the item. He really hates this and starts signing " finished " almost immediatly!
