Expertise and Research Interests

My research interests lie in studying the effects of environmental and

occupational exposures on the lung, with hopes of identifying potential

therapeutic and preventive modalities. Recently I have been studying the

immunomodulatory effects of retinoids/vitamin A at both the clinical and

cellular/molecular level. One ongoing clinical study is investigating the

utility of two intermediate endpoints, alveolitis and airway metaplasia, to

assess effectiveness of vitamin A supplementation in a population at high

risk for both lung cancer and fibrosis (asbestos-exposed workers). Most

recently I am investigating the pathogenesis of isocyanate asthma, the most

common cause of occupational asthma in industrialized countries, in

particular the role of T cells in this disorder. These studies involve

integrating advances in cellular and molecular immunology with clinical

research. A related project is an epidemiologic study characterizing the

respiratory hazards of autobody shop workers who are exposed to isocyanates

and are at high risk of developing asthma.
