Enzymes instead of GFCF? Can Gluten cause yeast?

Our son has been free of everything except for meat and veg (minus

corn, potatoes, and rice)for months now. We started enzymes a few

months ago. His poos started becoming solid (first time in 18

months), his behavior was great, everything was wonderful (although

he'd only eat meat, peas, pork rinds, and eggs). I think we even got

rid of his yeast. Then, we reintroduced rice cakes back into his

diet. Now, he only wants rice cakes and crackers and pork rinds. He

only wants crunchy foods and refuses to touch meat, eggs, or peas. At

the same time, we felt like prisoners in our own home and just wanted

to be able to go out in public for a meal. We were sick of staying in

all the time. We went out to eat and gave Noah enzymes and he ate a

whole basket of fried pickles, crab quesadillas, and half a basket of

chips and salsa (he's 2 years old). No bad reaction. So, we started

adding back in some fast foods with enzymes (not a good idea, but

boy, was it great not to have to arrange the whole day around being

at home during meal time). No bad reaction. We started feeling lucky

and started to make waffles and pancakes again - out of rice and bean

flour. He's only had fast food/restaurant food maybe 6 times in the

last month and he's self-selected to rice cakes for the last 3 weeks.

All of a sudden, today he has started acting drunk again, hand

flapping, opening and shutting the kitchen cabinet doors and banging

his drawer handles on his dresser. We have not seen ANY of this

behavior since Christmas - when we took out all sugars, fruit, and

carbs.

It sounds like his yeast has come back. Maybe it's from all the rice

cakes that he'll only eat now. Or could it be the gluten from the

fast foods (fried chicken, quesadillas). Can gluten cause yeast?

We've been GFCFSF for one year now.

I'm just so tired of all this. We saw a definite improvement when

Noah only ate meat, eggs, and peas. Now, it's like rice cakes have

taken over his life. And he only wants crunchy things. He won't eat

plain chicken, but will eat it if it's fried in flour.

I guess my question is.... does regular flour cause/contribute to

yeast? If I can get Noah off rice-everything and start making fried

chicken, fried anything with regular flour (plus giving him enzymes) -

well... do you think that would help? I hate to go back to meat,

peas, and egg again. Noah refuses to touch it anymore and he is one

of those stubborn little kids who would rather starve than give in.

We've got some major control issues going on here.

Should I be giving more than one AFP Pep capsule if I'm going to feed

him something with gluten? (BTW, we haven't reintroduced dairy. Last

year, when we took Noah off dairy and soy at the same time, we

noticed major improvements in awareness and eye contact within two

days. So we think casein and soy might be more of a problem than

gluten). Also, his IGE shows that he is not allergic to anything. So

we think it all has to do with a leaky gut.

Sorry for the rambling, jumpy post. I'm just trying to sort things

out and don't know what's going on or where to start. We were doing

so great until I messed up and reintroduced some carbs.

Just because certain behaviour returns it does not mean that it is food causing

it. It means his body is stressed to a level that shows as this type of

behaviour. There are lots of reasons why he could be stressed. Maybe he has

been going out more than usual and he has had an overload of stimulus?

Your son sounds like mine, only mine is 20 years old. I had him on

the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) for 1 year now.

(www.pecanbread.com) He was doing okay but I still have yeast issues

with him. I wanted to address the enzymes to give him the ability to

eat more foods AND to eliminate his yeast issues. My son eats

chicken, turkey, pork, green beans, peas, broccoli and eggs. I use

ground almonds as flour to make pancakes and muffins and cookies. I

would really like to be able to go to a more normal diet and stop

cooking so much! Perhaps you could use ground pork rinds or ground

nuts as the coating for the chicken instead of flour. This way you

can find out if the flour is the problem.

The problems may be due to yeast. But then, maybe your son is celiac

and should stay away from the grains... Others on this list with

more experience should be able to help you. Dana, ?

My son did not tolerate rice, even with enzymes. Remove it again, see

if that helps.

It can be either of these, yeast and/or rice intolerance. Because you

did not have this much problem with the other foods, I would say you

should consider removing rice again, see if that helps. Maybe

increase probiotics or yeast treatment.

Yes, and so can rice.

My son improved when I added back wheat and removed rice.

Start with that, see if it works.

Hi ,

How is your son doing now? Have you tried taking out rice yet? When

you first started eliminating foods, do you see any improvements? You

listed quite a number of foods.

Rice and gluten can cause yeast. As far as the yeast are concerned,

either makes no difference. All they see is starch/sugars -

particularly if it is refined. But really, look at what he is eating

overall. GFCF can cause yeast and gut injury not necessarily because

you take those foods out, but because gums, sugars, and starches are

given in abundance. It also doesn't eliminate artificial ingredients.

Maybe a whole grain flour would be better if you need to use

something. And definitely up the No-Fenol. The other enzymes can help

with breaking down foods, but killing the yeast might give you more

noticeable results. Are you giving a yeast killer with this (GSE,

OoO, prescription?). It might be worth doing a round of Diflucan or

other prescription yeast killer. Yeast is tough.

Soy is also a starch. Milk contains lactose sugar. You might try

yogurt or cheese as some variety. This wouldn't have the lactose

contain. Any casein issues can be handled by the Peptizyde. I am just

trying to think of ways to expand the diet.

What's this? I hope it was good. Just haven't heard of it. I don't

know if these were fermented (pickles, you know) but some of the anti-

yeast diets firmly are against any fermented foods or malt (as in

ketchup). So maybe all that at once tipped the scales.
