Guest guest
I would be interested to hear what dosing you are using for the Betiane HCL. I have read about it and think it might help my 2 1/2 year old, but I can't find any info that talks about safety and dosing in children under age 12. Thanks, Miti > Devin, our son's DAN doctor has recommended that we give our son > betaine HCl along w/ith enzymes at each meal. Guest guest
The plant-based enzymes can work under a broad pH range, so the addition of betaine won't hurt, but on the other hand the enzymes work faster at more neutral pH. Stomach acid's main role is to activate the stomach and pancreatic enzymes. Plant/ oral enzymes do not need activation. Nor does HCl directly " digest " foods, it basically denatures proteins so they are more accessible to enzyme actions. > Devin, our son's DAN doctor has recommended that we give our son > betaine HCl along w/ith enzymes at each meal. Guest guest
Devin, I answered my question even before you did. I gave my son one cap of HCl last night with his normally well tolerate enzymes, and within minutes he was salivating horribly and complaining of mouth pain (which I assume was reflux). This afternoon I tried once again and the same thing happened, enough of a test for me. I am sticking with enzymes and more supps...Thanks so much! Guest guest
If you give someone HCL or Apple Cider Vinegar to increase stomach acidity it may burn as they drink it, but if they need it within 20 minutes they should feel better. In your case, sounds like he really doesn't need it. The pain would have been because of too much stomach acid. I don't know if the remedy I use on my son would help the person who wanted to use HCL but said it didn't have dose info for young kids. When my 6 year old has heartburn/reflux I give him some apple cider vinegar (1/2 to 1 tsp) in warm water with a bit of honey. The reflux/heartburn is a sign that he is not digesting something despite the enzymes (perhaps he isn't taking enough enzymes yet). It works very well and has never caused a negative reaction. It increases the acidity of the stomach but is well tolerated - not as strong as the HCL. In fact with my son, when he has reflux he often becomes very whiney and can't sleep. But if I gave him the ACV, within 10-15 minutes he is happy again and if at night, goes to sleep. However, someone (?) said something about not tolerating Apple Cider Vinegar because it increased yeast. I can't remember for sure. My son doesn't have really a yeast problem so that is not an issue for me. Just a possiblity. Abby
