ASA to Participate in Press Conference on Mercury and Autism; ASA President

Grossman to Discuss State of Autism in America

3/28/2006 12:07:00 PM

---------------------------------

Assignment Desk, Daybook Editor

Contact: Kate Ranta of the Autism Society of America, 301-657-0881 ext. 120

News Advisory:

WHAT: A panel briefing on the growing evidence of a link between mercury,

vaccines and autism, and important new developments on Capitol Hill, in major

universities and within the mainstream media.

WHO: Lee Grossman, president & CEO of the Autism Society of America (ASA) and

the father of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Grossman will discuss

the state of ASD in America, the grant ASA recently received to bring awareness

to environmental health issues and ASD, the paradigm shift in considering autism

as a treatable condition and the response the medical community must take to

address the autism epidemic. He will also be available to respond to questions

regarding pending legislation related to ASD.

Dan Olmsted, journalist for UPI who writes the regular column, " The Age of

Autism. " Olmsted will discuss his recent reporting on unvaccinated populations

-- including Amish children in Pennsylvania and patients at a holistic medical

practice outside Chicago -- as well as other investigations into early cases of

autism, and reports of improvements after medical treatments.

Kirby, author of the book Evidence of Harm -- Mercury in Vaccines and

the Autism Epidemic, recently released in paperback with a new update. Kirby

will discuss newly- published science from major U.S. universities that support

the mercury-autism link, media reports of recent declines in new autism numbers

and newly-leaked Institute of Medicine (IOM) transcripts that would indicate

undue pressure by the Centers for Disease Control over IOM vaccine committee

members to reject the thimerosal-autism hypothesis.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), who will unveil a bill to provide for a new

study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations of American children. Data from

this relatively simple study could settle once and for all the question of a

link between vaccines and autism, ADD, ADHD and other disorders. Rep. Maloney

will also discuss the federal bill to ban thimerosal in vaccines, which she

co-sponsors with Rep. Dave Weldon (R-Fla.), and a possible Congressional move to

empanel a new committee of the IOM that would consider new evidence to support

the link.

WHEN: Thursday, March 30. Breakfast at 8:30 a.m., briefing from 9 to 10 a.m.

WHERE: National Press Club (gor Room), 529 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C.

I recommend that all of you praising ASA for stepping into the

limelight with the prime journalistic exponents of the thimerosal issue

challenge ASA to do the following that the rest of us have been

laboring on for so long:

1. Support our rallies including the Mercury Generation March

2. Support bills banning thimerosal

3. Publicly state that research funding should go to the vaccine autism

link issue

4. Work with us to advocate for these issues - assist on local

legislation initiatives

5. Take a vocal position on the vaccine issue

6. Challenge legislation that would take away the rights of vaccine

injured children

I could go on. There have been people donating their time and money for

years now on these issues--making sacrifices. ASA has not been with us,

except for a small number of local chapters. I welcome all support. But

that means support, not just a photo opportunity.

So welcome National ASA but challenge them to truly support our issues.

I suggest you send an mail message to Lee Grossman and ask him what

are ASA's positions on the issues?

Excellent ideas Bob. BTW, I wasn't praising ASA I was being

sarcastic. Please see my earlier post on EOH - " E-mails and ego's "

about e-mails not always being received as the message was intended.

How does Lenny get away with it?

I don't see how anyone could praise ASA. They have denied and

remained an archaic organization as the evidence has been mounting for

years.

I am hopeful their big name will make CDC/industry and those in the

loop very nervous.

I am also hopeful that AAP will be specifically mentioned for

neglecting this medical epidemic and ignoring the dangers of mercury

in vaccines (that may be a fantasy on my part)

I would agree with the statement. The reason is to voice the entire

autism population, you get a watered down version of several leading

thoughts. It's impossible for one org to be THE voice for families,

friends, and individuals with autism from birth to death.

I also second what said. I had a problem with our local ASA, now

I'm on the board. Why? because it's not fair for me to trash a total

of 8 parents (as if they don't have their own battles) in not

providing enough to the thousands of us in the region it covers. Gee,

what's wrong with them? Lol.

Now I'm working on packets on info that includes biomedical,

eduational, legal rights. and emotional issues. Believe me, it's

virtually impossible to create such a packet. There's just too much

info and too many differening ideas out there. I get overwhelmed every

time I start. It's taken me four years to learn all I know, and I

still learn new things every day. Giving a list a mile long of

websites and 20 different books to read is very overwhelming to

someone who was just told 1 week prior that their child has autism. I

don't really know how to do it the right way that will satisfy every

personality, every need, and every possible treatment out there.

I would agree with the statement. The reason is to voice the entireautism population, you get a watered down version of several leadingthoughts. It's impossible for one org to be THE voice for families, friends, and individuals with autism from birth to death. I also second what said. I had a problem with our local ASA, nowI'm on the board. Why? because it's not fair for me to trash a totalof 8 parents (as if they don't have their own battles) in notproviding enough to the thousands of us in the region it covers. Gee,what's wrong with them? Lol. Now I'm working on packets on info that includes biomedical, eduational, legal rights. and emotional issues. Believe me, it'svirtually impossible to create such a packet. There's just too muchinfo and too many differening ideas out there. I get overwhelmed everytime I start. It's taken me four years to learn all I know, and Istill learn new things every day. Giving a list a mile long ofwebsites and 20 different books to read is very overwhelming tosomeone who was just told 1 week prior that their child has autism. Idon't really know how to do it the right way that will satisfy everypersonality, every need, and every possible treatment out there. Wow – this ASA discussion has been great.

I completely concur with getting on the board of your local group or at the

national level to drive the areas of need you feel will help parents the most.  This

is a call of action!

In Holly’s case – it may be a little

tough if they wanted to drive her out of town…wow.  IN everyone elses cases –

go forward and make the change to help families the way you see fit. The goal

is getting involved.

GOOOO AT IT!

I recommend that all of you

praising ASA for stepping into the

limelight with the prime journalistic exponents of

the thimerosal issue

challenge ASA to do the following that the rest of

us have been

laboring on for so long:

1. Support our rallies including the Mercury

Generation March

2. Support bills banning thimerosal

3. Publicly state that research funding should go

to the vaccine autism

link issue

4. Work with us to advocate for these issues -

assist on local

legislation initiatives

5. Take a vocal position on the vaccine issue

6. Challenge legislation that would take away the

rights of vaccine

I could go on. There have been people donating

their time and money for

Lol.  That was years ago – 1998.  the new

leader who took her place is much more relaxed but they only really do one

thing per year, an awareness day at sea world and offer no GFCF foods.

I think people keep missing that I wasn’t

talking about the local chapters, I was talking about national.  They set the

rules, the standard, the tone.  If they take no stand, why are they there?

Don't count your chickens before the eggs are hatched. The

President of ASA could very well come out and say that they are

concerned about thimerosal along with a laundry list of other

potential toxins. My fear is that this will muddy the waters

further, I hope to God that thimerosal is not mentioned in passing

and then move on to this small study they are doing on environmental

toxins. There is absolutely no mention about mercury or thimerosal

in the text of their proposed study.

Unfortunately, this guy will probably have more credibility in the

eyes of the press because of his title. Hopefully Kirby, Dan

Olmstead and Carolyn Maloney know what this guy is going to say. If

he falls short of full support for vacinnated vs. non-vaccinated

study that Maloney is floating in Congress we will look like a house

divided on a very big stage.
