Not true! If it cost that much for us to chelate our son, we would

have to make do with living in a cardboard box somewhere. Does this

include the costs of lots of testing, doctor's appointments and

prescription meds? I am not using a DAN! doctor, just a local

supportive pediatrician who can run basic tests for free (I'm in

Canada). The supplements an chelators we buy are over-the-counter.

Challenge tests can be risky, and apparently not accurate. Most

people chelating on this list would advise you to avoid them.

Hope you find a way to manage the costs of chelation.

take care

I really don't see how it could cost tat much. Do you mind if I ask

who told you that? Was it a doctor? Many times someone will tell

you something inaccurate to discourage you from pursuing it.

Such as my dentist telling me not to remove my fillings because I

could lose all my teeth. Which is ridiculous.

So far I have spent $93 on a hair test and maybe $30 on supplements.

Managing the diet is not to bad either. Most healthy foods are

cheaper than the pricey junk ones. You can do this if you shop

around and do not pay for uneccesary testing that shows nothing

anyway. Some tests are covered under insurance, such as CBC's.

Chelation drugs such as ALA or DMPS are not that expensive either.

At first I was a bit taken at the cost of some of the vitamins but

if you shop around, you can find fair prices. And if you figure out

how many doses are in the bottle, how many days it will last. The

cost per month averages out pretty low. We figures that just not

ordering pizza or going out to eat twice a month would cover that.

I too would skip the challenge test. All this is going to do is free

up mercury and move it around. Not a good thing to do right now. It

will show how much he dumps out but not what is still in him or how

toxic he was/is.

The way I feel about all the extra testing is this: I already know

my child was exposed to mercury. I already know that mercury stays

in the body. He exhibits signs and symptoms of exposure. So doing a

challenge test just tells me what I already know. He has mercury.

The hair test will tell me this as well. But it will tell me what

supplements I can give him to help him in addition to chelation. And

it does not hurt him or traumatize him. (no blood needs to be drawn,

no peeing in a container, no wierd people looking at him).

You can do this and not be broke. I can tell you that are annual

income is below middle class. We live modestly compared to many

people. We do not have cable, or any extras. We don't have new

anything really. And somehow, I am squeaking out money for the

things he is needing.

Here is another thought: IT costs about $170,000 to raise a child

from birth to age 18 anyway. So maybe they meant lifetime

maintenance of a child with needs.

Even if it did cost $40,000 most Americans do not hesitate to spend

that on a car. A CAR..something that is worn out and broken in 10

years. Just like people tell me it would be too expensive to get

thier fillings out. Well, yes, but not as expensive as what you will

spend on prescriptions when your older and sick to maintain all the

diseases you have aquired from your fillings. It can be hard to see

the big picture. But personally, I am a moral person, but when it

comes to my kids..I'd beg, borrow and steal if need be. There is

always a way. Don't let someone scare you out of helping your son!

It is people with ideas like this that got him in that situation in

the first place.

I spent at most $200 per month. Most months were less than that. I

did not use a doctor, or any tests. I did everything with OTC

supplements, on a conservative protocol.

First of all a challenge test is a really bad idea because the high, single dose

is highly likely to cause redistribution.

One could manage to spend lots for attempts at chelation, particularly if using

products which claim to be chelators but really aren't or by going to doctors

(including some DAN! docs) who require all sorts of unnecessary tests. Many on

this list chelate without a doc and order DDI hair tests (and sometimes a few

others) themselves through DLS. Some docs drag things out for a long time and

require many office visits (which can really add up) before getting to

chelation.

Many also use various approaches in addition to and at the same time as

chelation and may be adding up all the interventions. Supplements, antivirals,

probiotics, CST, NAET, speech, OT, gfcf diet and/or digestive enzymes, and many

other interventions are potentially complimentary....Many families also chelate

several or all family members at a time.

Ask the person who quoted you that price to itemize for you. Perhaps this

person was doing IV chelation which must be done in doctor's office and would

cost a lot. You can get oral chelators without a prescription.

It's not true.

You can learn the process, buy the chelators over-

the-counter, and do the procedure without a doctor

and without tests on the cheap. You can even order

the safety tests (liver, kidney, CBC) online without

a doctor at www.directlabs.com.

Many of us though have a doctor as a guide and

safety net.

The cost can certainly get that high if you are using a doctor. When we were

using Dr. Edelson it was $250 once a week for EDTA IVs. The DSMA suppositories

were like $50 a week. Not to mention all the other supplements and treatments.

I spent $2500 for lab work. I did almost the same lab work with another doctor

and it cost about $300. And if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield Great Plains

will bill the insurance for the test.

I thank the Lord that my insurance covered (reimbursed) about 70%. I thank

the Lord also that I wised up to the chelation game and I will never give a

doctor or any other person that much money or power over my child again!!!!

There are wonderful doctors out there (Bradstreet is one) but there are also

many that pray on parents ignorance and willingness to trust doctors blindly.

I am now a big advocate for alternative medicine (Kinesology, homeopath,

acupressure and so on). Whatever you choose to do....educate yourself about it

first. Talk to other parents doing the treatment and meet their kids.

Out of all our interventions, chelation has been the cheapest!

We live in a highly taxed state/county with fairly good school

systems. Several thousand a year on that one.

ABA, even with state funding, runs us $15000 annually. Without

funding, we were spending $60K.

Out of pocket speech therapy is another $400/month.

Chelation? I spent the big bucks on Lee Silsby TD-DMSA ($120/mo for

us), $12/mo on ALA and approximately $100/mo on other supplements.

I see the doctor bi-annually, at a cost of $800-1000. $400 for hair

tests, about $200 for two urine tests, $400 for bloodwork not

covered by Medicaid... puts my annual chelation expenses at about

$2500. Add in a conference or two for another $1000.

I'll be dropping DMSA over time, so that will cut our expenses

nearly in half.

There ARE people who can spend thousands upon thousands on testing,

boutique supplement blends, monthly doctor phone consults and

multiple visits to out of state MDs. There was one mom here who

said she had spent ONE MILLION dollars trying to cure her son (she

was far from successful). I don't know if anyone remembers that

conversation!

I honestly can't even figure out how I'd spend $20K annually on

chelation. What would I do?

Sometimes I wonder if my son would be ANY different had I not

started all this DAN treatment. I mean how do we KNOW what is making

our children better when we are trying so many things at once (ie.

discreet trials, ABA, biomed stuff, diet, just giving the child ALOT

of attention and opportunities for socialization). I think the diet

DOES have to do alot with this and hopefully chelation helps to rid

of the diet. I will always wonder if AGE has the most to do with it

as my son is only 2.5 and speech delays are typical at that age and

many talk around that time. I am not complaining about the $1000S of

dollars I have spent as if I didnt spend it I would have always

wondered. I just think that there is ALWAYS someone with a new

treatment out everyday that is going to heal our children when diet

and behavior treatments may be the best solutions...

It's not necessarily true -- unless you have absolutely no insurance

coverage, are using a doctor that way over-charges and use a boatload of

supplements.

Our insurance paid for everything involved in our chelation except for the

l-glutathione, mineral and vitamin C supplements. Since we reacted to a lot of

supplements at that time, we didn't use very many during the process. If

your child tests to be metals toxic, it should be billed to insurance as such

since you're treating metals toxicity, not autism.

i was just relaying my particular experience. i have b/c of ca ppo. my out of

pocket expenses are still in the $$$ cause i do a LOT. not everyone has to do

what i do-- i have a tough nut and so have to put forth a lot more for getting

him the necessary help he needs.

one thing i do that is very costly is a lot of tests. they prove to be most

helpful though. my son also is severly apraxic and so he has seen a pvt speech

pathologist, phd for over 2 yrs. some ins reimbursement there. i also do a lot

of " out of the box " therapies (winding down a little on that)

what really irks me is that these doctors are totally exploiting us

and our situation to make money while offering us minimal help,

while caring, knowledgable individuals like Andy are giving us free

and more comprehensive help. Doesn't that just really piss you off

too??

I think I have been spending an extra $500 a month on supps. but some of

those last more than a month.

so maybe less. But my son is taking the FULL MONTY. This is w/o a doctor,

and just going off the hair test and getting help from the group.

since we need to chelate our whole family, I am looking into purchasing the

vitamins in bulk and making them into capsules with a capmaking machine to

save money. I plan to get this down to a manageable cost so we all can do

it.

Part of my plan is to contact companies like enzymatica and try to get a

lower cost on items like virastop. A lot of times you can contact companies

and get a donation of supplements. There are agency's like Helping hands or

the Fox 4 love fund that accept applications for grants for special needs.

Where there is a will, there is a way. I plan on being a crusader for

chelation on a budget.

I have spent an extra $150 a week on gf/cf groceries (for a family of nine).

This was mostly using lots of panda puffs...and prepackaged gf mixes. We

are starting to venture out into the grains and specialty flours and cook

from scratch more, which will save $$.

My children have medicaid which will not pay for " supplement " therapy. I

have been working 2 part time jobs and have 2 very small businesses on top

of that, plus selling a few unneeded things.

I figure at $500 a month for 2 years, that is the cost of what I would have

spent on a nice car for my son. I don't know how you can put a cost on his

life. We see gains every week and will continue to raise income and cut

expenses, and it has been way worth the cost. Our lifestyle has gone from

totally having slush money to totally frugal....almost overnight! It is

going to take some getting used to for the children, but they will manage.

Once we are done chelating, I imagine the treatment costs will go way down.

It only takes a 2-4 years to chelate the worst cases, so this is just

temporary. We could even do one family member at a time, which is what we

are doing now.

My costs of chelation so far: Lunch everyday at the same organic restaurant

for 16 months. I began with spending between $8 and $9 per day and later

spent less as I got healthier and ordered smaller meals. The food happened

to contain cilantro. I was also doing other things to treat my health

problems with little support from the medical community because conventional

wisdom in the medical community is that " people like me don't get well;

symptom management is the name of the game " -- an answer I am not willing to

accept. When I was very, very ill, I spent upwards of $300 per month on

alternative remedies. But my medical condition can easily cost more than

$80,000 per year to do what conventional medicine thinks I should. But my

problem is not merely mercury poisoning. I also have a genetic disorder

that most folks on this list do not have.

FWIW, HTH, and YMMV (and probably will, given the uniqueness of my

situation),

No, even if you use IV chelators they cost c$120 a go. You do need to

pay for testing but again these are mostly less than $100 a go and

theyr'e not all the time. TD and oral chelators don't cost much at

all, particularly as the TD stuff tends to really last. EDTA

suppositories are $75 a month I think but that's a lot less than $20k

a year. Mind you, we've spent about $12,000 in one year but some of

that is because we're in the UK and everythign has to be shipped into

and out of the US.

There are some charlatans out there - better to wait for a good doctor

with a reasonable price list than a quack out to make a fast buck.
