The past decade has seen an epic explosion in technology, with childhood TV

and videogame addictions now reaching epidemic proportions. Diagnosis of

physical, mental and social disorders in children continue to rise at

alarming rates, often accompanied by prescription of psychotropic (mind

altering) medications. While research into correlations between these two

trends is inconclusive and requires further investigation, health and

education professionals should develop policies that ensure TV and videogame

addictions in children are addressed, prior to diagnosis and medication.

The Tragic Consequences of Drugging Our Children

The number of prescriptions for psychotropic drugs for children has more

than doubled between 1995 and 2000. This revealing documentary by Null

details the devastating consequences of this excessive medicating of our

children with mind-altering drugs.

The film focuses on children who have been diagnosed with attention deficit

hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), even though evidence to verify such a

diagnosis is lacking.

Instead, kids are often labeled with ADHD simply for acting like kids:

fidgeting, speaking out of turn, not wanting to sit still, and being hyper.

reactions, including suicide attempts, Health Canada has warned.

Social Skills and The Flickering Screen

It is nearing twelve noon, a bright, cool spring day. Their morning

assignments completed, the ten students aged eight to twelve who do their

lessons around my extra-large kitchen table explode out of the house for

their lunch break. All of them have learning problems, several of them have

behavior problems, and none of them fit in with the other kids in school.
