If you have a weak stomach or are eating, do NOT read on ...

I have started my son on the NN complete omega 3-6-9. He is very

sensitive to supplements, and so I just started him on half of one

capsule and worked up to one capsule so far. The other day he had two

bowel movements that smelled like vomit. This is a new one for us and

concerning to me. He has also had diarhea on and off since starting

the fish oil.

Can fish oil do this?

Is this a good or bad thing?

Thanks.

Michele

I cannot speak to good or bad but can tell you that we recently

started my son back on fish oil, not the same one as you though, and

we had smelly poop and diarrhea. It finally subsided yesterday. Since

he had no fever or signs of other illness I figured it was the fih

oil. We also get flaxseed in doet so in our case my son may have

simply had too much of a good thing along with an adjustment period.

Stool is normal in texture and smell now. When we had smelly stuff it

was not always the same smell either. Some was a stinky cheese smell

and at one point it smelled like a barnyard. Oh Lord if I don't get

kicked off here now.

Anyway, I hope your solution is as simple as ours so far appears to

be...time.

Loose stool don't happen to all children when they first supplement -

but it's not uncommon. Typically even if it happens it's mild and

lasts just a few days to a week -and then the surge if you check the

archives. Any time you add extra oil to a child's diet it can create

a looser stool. For most here that's not an issue as that's a good

thing in regards to constipation (another little struggle many of us

go through with our children once potty trained!)

Perhaps you increased too quickly for your son and you should go back

to 1/2 capsule? Again it's typically mild loose or mushy -not always

diarrhea like you are seeing. Only once I heard about a child from

Canada that had severe diarrhea and to this day I still don't know if

it was a coincidence and perhaps a virus hit the same time?

I never heard of the poop smelling like vomit. As always if not sure

if positive or negative signs are due to the fish oil you can stop

them...wait and observe -then start again and observe. Fish oils are

a food supplement -so ask yourself if you notice changes when your

child eats tuna fish.

" Stools normally have an unpleasant odor, but one that is recognized

as fairly common....Foul-smelling stools also have normal causes,

most notably diet. "
