Guest guest
I have used more than one SLP for some time and my son responds to each of them .It is important they have experience with Apraxia in Children .We just got insurance coverage (not without battle) .We are currently going to a private therpist and then two other slp thru the school so he has 3 currently and he is 5. email me directly if you have and questions or just want to talk .I just got back from the national apraxia conferance in burg. Good Luck... > > Well, my husband spoke with the insurance, ready to put up a fight and it turns out they do cover speech up to 30 visits a year, so less than once a week. This changed 1st of the year and since we've been going since November, we were denied then. > Anyway, instead of trying to get reimbursed for the sessions in the past, we want to do 2 sessions a week. I spoke with the facility that we go to and they said when they having an opening, they'll put her in. This whole time I thought it was an opening with her current SLP. Well, we were given a slot on Mondays. Again, I assumed it was with her current SLP. Turns out, it's someone else. Her SLP came out and introduced us, I was so confused, I don't even remember the new SLP's name said she had experience with Apraxia, etc. > After the session was over, we spoke and I just don't know. She kept talking about my daughter being " distracted " and maybe it was because they were in a different room, etc. Said she would ask my SLP what kind of chair she puts sits her in, because she kept wanting to get up. My daughter just turned 3. She's not going to " sit " for any long period of time. I know she was working with the Kaufman cards with her and I guess she wanted her to " sit " for this. > What do you think? Should I continue with the 2 different therapists or should I just wait it out until our current SLP can see her 2x a week? I feel like I just don't want to waste the 2x a week since insurance is covering. > HELP!! > >
Guest guest
From a speech therapist's perspective there are some benefits to having more than 1 speech therapist, namely the generalization factor...if your daughter can perform similar therapy tasks for more than one therapist, this is wonderful...try to think back to when your daughter first started working with her initial therapist, was there an adjustment period or relationship development period? Perhaps if this new therapist talks to the other therapist, he/she will gain insight into your daughter's likes/dislikes in therapy... Personally when I am working with a child at this age level I don't require sitting as a prerequisite for learning, I often find the best gains can be made in a child-directed play activity with ample support and infusion of therapy targets into such tasks. Some therapists are less comfortable with this style. As a parent, you know your child best. I would be open and honest with this new therapist about how you feel perhaps he/she can explain why sitting in a chair is necessary. The key to the Kaufman method is repetition to create an automatic production over time; the less drill, the better when using such an approach. I hope that helps. Best of luck. Theresa Theresa A. Guest guest
Hey there, My son is approaching 3. At two he was verbal oral apraxia dx. Due to govt program we could only get PROMPT ST 2x per week and ST only had time for him 2x per week. For insurance the 30 visists were used by another ST. So he ended up with 2 ST. One was nice and strict the other they just had a great time and he loved her. I have had nothing occur negatively using 2 ST. Actually, it is an advantage because, first of all in our situations, you must take what you can get. Second of all, four eyes and 4 ears are better and 2 eyes and 2 ears. Besides, if one backs out for a week, you always have the other. Today, my boy is functing above age appropriate! Best to you, Colleen Mother of Charlie almost 3!
