Guest guest
I agree completely with your statement that if you've been on a restricted diet for many years without healing then what was the point! Our son is 16yo and has been completely CF for 8 years. Made an attempt at GF for awhile but just couldn't pull it off! He also can't have chocolate, pancake syrup (can tolerate 100% pure maple syrup), fruits and numerous other things. This was getting ridiculous!! I just found your book before Christmas and am honestly so excited at the prospect of getting him healed and back on a regular diet. The diet was definately necessary for a lot of years because there was no other choice and the behaviours these foods caused just couldn't continue. It wasn't until I read the book that I realized he had a problem with phenols - my mind just didn't make the connection that chocolate and fruit could be in the same " food group " ! What people with young kids have to realize is that having them on a very restricted diet may work for them now but these kids will grow up. The diet has not healed my son. As long as he remains on this diet and all the supps that go along with it he will never be able to leave home!! He couldn't shop for himself, he'd buy the foods he wanted not the foods allowed. He can't read and understand ingredients labels - I have enough problems with that! He will not be able to live without support (as things stand now). If we can't explain the importance of the diet to doctors, other pros and even extended family, how will we convice a underpaid residential support worker! The consequences of a slip up on the diet are great. Most of our supps can't be bought at the local drug store but have to be ordered from out of country so you need to be on top of that and not run out. So - unless I'm prepared to make my son totally dependent on me to maintain his diets and supps and supervise everything that goes in his mouth for the rest of his life - WE NEED OFF THESE DIETS. I explained this to another mom and she tried to convince me to go to SCD! I don't want to trade up to a newer diet, I want off. After reading your book I really feel that there is hope. I know there are no guarantees but at least we have an option now! I just wish I'd found your book sooner. Thanks so much!! ps - my Houstons products arrived this week - now I can start - hooray!!
