Hi there Isaiah! Just wanted to say, thanks for posting! I'm looking

forward to trying Socca Oven, thanks to your post. Since you seem to

be in the Berkeley area, I thought I would mention that I've enjoyed

eating the rice noodles at Slurp, but you might want to ask them

about CC issues. :) Happy GF eating!

Hi, Isaiah,

I’m in Oakland but old enough to be your mother.  I

love the Socca Oven!  - Pizza I can eat!! And Café Gratitude – desserts!

We also eat out at Saysetha Thai restaurant on Telegraph in North Oakland  –

they understand the gluten free needs, breakfast at Temescal Café on Telegraph or

Mama’s Royal Café on Broadway or the CoffeMill on Grand, some of the

dishes at Pizziolo (Telegraph) (although that is a bit riskier as they make

their own dough for the pizzas and the cross contamination issue is there in

spades) (not Dona Tomas next door – they are now frying flautas in the

chips fat), some of the dishes at Cactus Tacqueria on College, most sushi

places if you bring your own GF soy sauce. Outback in Richmond,

PFChang’s in Emeryville, Zak’s in Berkeley on Telegraph if you are careful with

choosing, Bistro Liaison in Berkeley – the blond waitress/hostess is GF

herself I think and the chef gets it.  I think that some of the really Mexican

restaurants in Fruitvale would be good too, but I don’t speak enough

Spanish to really make sure.   Please do share the ones that work for you as

well – I’m pretty eager to broaden the spectrum.

I can’t do casein (dairy) either, so

Pamela’s pancakes are off limits to me – we make a rice and

garbanzo bean flour dosa with apple cider kefir for pancakes at home – or

just the same base as the soccas – garbanzo bean flour, water and salt –

just fine with pancake toppings like maple syrup or fruit.

I’m mostly not eating bread,

although I’ve had the I Can Eat That breads and they are far better than

the store loaves in general.  Whole Foods does have a pretty good selection in

their freezer, but most have milk or butter in them.  The Food Mill has a

terrific barbeque sauce – Bone Sucking Sauce – that is GF, but the

flour hangs in the air there from years of grinding good whole wheat flour.

Ranch 99 has a world of Asian foods that are GF as well as really good prices

on fish and poultry and coconut milks.  And The El Cerrito Natural Foods store

on San Pablo has a more interesting selection

than the Berkeley

one on Gilman. Farmer Joe’s – not so much.

Hope this helps!

Connie

from a new member (Oakland)

Hi all,

My name's Isaiah. I'm a 25 year old woman living in lovely Oakland,

CA, who just found out that in addition to all my other health

problems (fibromyalgia, IBS, torn lumbar discs, etc) I may have Celiac

Disease. Ugh. I am getting blood tests next week, which will likely be

inaccurate since I've been on a GF diet for 2 months and when I tried

to do the gluten challenge I lasted exactly 36 hours because it made

me so sick ;-P I've also sent away for Enterolabs testing just to have

an alternative source of information about what's going on in my gut.

I think I can say with confidence I will never even attempt another

gluten challenge.

Anyway, someone on www.glutenfreeforums.com pointed me towards this

list and I'm so happy it exists!

Going GF has been hard in some ways, but it's leading me to wonderful

discoveries like Socca Oven (yum) and Cafe Gratitude (the

" cheesecake "

is out of this world) in Berkerley, and eating healthier in general. I

just made some Pamela's pancakes this morning and baked up a loaf of I

Can Eat That Bread (made in Berkeley,

sold at Berkeley Bowl). I'm

always discovering new things, though ultimately I need to remember

that I'll always be better off with less processed foods and more

home-made food!

I guess my #1 reason for joining this list is figuring out what local

restaurants I can eat at!

Isaiah

Here's the website for Socca Oven:

http://soccaoven.com/index.php

I just read about them in the latest issue of Sunset Magazine. Their

menu consists entirely of chickpea flour " pancakes " topped with a wide

variety of items-veggies, fish, chicken, even lamb. Everything is

gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and sugar free! I need to take a drive to

Berkely...

Here's an older article from Sunset with a picture and recipe:

Yum!
