Hi Adam,

Again I can realte - but just last week I started taking a few tablespoons of

virgin coconut oil each day, and I am feeling amazing again. I am also pureeing

EVERYTHING - just to be safe. I saw my symptoms start to go away after a couple

days of:

breakfast: mashed ripe banana, tablespoon+, coconut oil, honey,

lunch: same as breakfast or dinner

dinner: pureed soup broth (boiled carrot, celery, onion)

6 days later, I feel great. I have also added back in cheeseburgers, eggs,

chicken, yogurt, pumpkin, pears, almond butter, squash.

I read great stuff about coconut oil, it's anti-inflamatory, great for killing

yeast, helps people loose weight, check out links below. I did feel a " die-off "

rumbling tummy the first couple days on coconut oil, and am still eating honey

(which would feed yeast, if thats what I have, which I doubt) but anyhow, I have

seen drastic improvements. I am no longer waking up in horrible pain each night

- last 3 days/nights - totally pain free!!!

I have read that some get diareha from coconut oil, but it firmed up my stools

which had been loose/soft for months. I also believe it seriously helped with

the infalmation. I also no longer eat anything after 5pm.

Oh, and my favorite new treat: I mix up almond butter and honey, roll it in

melted coconut oil, freeze, and each throughout the day for energy. My non-scd

family thinks they are just as yummy as any candybar.

http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/

http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/

I realize some may totally disagree with me - but I firmly believe the addition

of 3 tbsp coconut oil/day has gotten me out of the 3 month flare - and feeling

awesome again, no burning pain, no bloating, no cramping! They also say to

gradually add coconut oil to your diet, starting very slow, but I did jump right

in. You can buy virgin coconut oil in most health food stores, expeller pressed

would be a second choice.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks so much, I will try that for sure!

Yeah - it took me about 4 months to get back on track after my 3 month flare -

though nothing as bad

as being hospitalized, just a return to symptoms. In retrospect, I believe I

was having an overgrowth

of yeast.

Have you tried starting s. boulardii and upping the dose until you hit about 3

or 4 or 5 in the chance

that you may be effected by yeast overgrowth?

Also, have you considered LDN?

If you are doing anything else - like natural antifungals, antibacterials, other

forms of supplementation,

you should stop it for the meanwhile. I might experiment with stopping the

yogurt as well for the meanwhile

to see if that changes anything - might or might not.

Can you eat pureed zucchini or pureed spinach or carrots?

I'd probably stick with broths for a few days - sounds like you are having

intense inflammation

everywhere and everything is kind of being reactive for you. Chicken and meat

and fish broth

for a little while.

I haven't heard of s. boulardii but figure I am getting a good amount of

probiotic through the yogurt. What is the difference? Is it too much to take

both. How does s. boulardii help with yeast overgrowth?

I haven't done well with the veg you mentioned except purée carrots/squash.

Could that help in the healing?

Also not sure what ldn is but will look into it.

S. boulardii looks like a good probiotic helper in wipping out the bad yeasts, I

actually ordered some last week as I was willing to try anthing - it still

hasn't arrived, but now I don't even feel like I need it after eating all this

coconut oil. strange but true!

here is a place to buy it, and some good info on S. boulardii:

s. boulardii help with yeast overgrowth directly. It's a non-

colonizing yeast that eats pathogenic yeast. So it will help

with that in an entirely different manner than regular probiotics

which, IME, don't do much for yeast overgrowth, or if so,

very, very slowly.

So if that is what you have right now, it can help.

No, they have different functions and different specializations..

If you can tolerate it. I might do a day or two of just (lots of) broth and a

bit of

chicken or so, to help get past the difficulty you seem to be in at the moment.

I just wanted to add that I'm having the same great effects from coconut oil. I

remember seeing your post several days ago about eating a few spoonfuls of

coconut oil per day. I had been cooking with it off and on for a long time but

not that consistently, and hadn't been just eating it straight. So a couple

nights ago I tried a teaspoon of it before bed, and the next morning saw

immediate improvement! It's probably too early to know if the good effects will

continue, but so far it's looking good. Thanks for that tip! I wouldn't have

thought of it.

By the way, does anyone know whether coconut butter would have a similar effect?

Is it harder to tolerate than coconut oil or about the same? I know I don't

tolerate shredded coconut yet, but I'd like to try some coconut butter if it's

not likely to mess things up.

Hey Misha,

That is awesome! I started out doing basically the same thing - having a

spoonful of coconut before bed, and I totally slept better that night, (I could

tell the inflamation had gone down) then had it again for breakfast, then the

next day started mashing bananas into it. I still can't get over the

improvement.

I don't know much about coconut butter - it must be close to the oil I am

guessing? I am excited to try coconut cream concentrate, which is supposed to be

like concentrated coconut milk loaded with coconut oil. I ordered some from

tropical traditions, and am patiently awaiting it's arrival! I still can't

tolerate coconut flour too well, but do okay with shredded coconut baked into

things, like shortcakes. But since this last " 3 month " flare, I am taking a

hiatus from baked goodies for the time being, well most baked goodies, I do have

a homemade pumpkin pie baking in the oven right now!

Coconut butter, at least the way I get it from Tropical Traditions, is

the whole coconut ground very very fine. In other words, not just the

oil. You have to heat it gently when you get it and stir the oil

back into the rest of it (like non-homogenized peanut butter). It's

really delicious. As far as whether you could handle it, I don't

really know. If you are having a lot of trouble with fiber, perhaps

not quite yet.

I'm sorry I don't have any food tips for you, I seem to be one of the people

that doesn't notice much of a difference in symptoms by what I eat within the

diet.

My 3 month flare lasted for about 3 months. Remicade was not working so I

switched to Humira. Things were getting worse, so I asked for Prednisone for

fear of being hospitalized again. It helped to keep the high fevers down, but I

still had a lot of symptoms. Finally I was put on a 2 week course of Flagyl and

Cipro and have felt awesome ever since. I needed the meds, and I don't know how

you feel about that, but I feel like the meds in combination with the diet are

working well. Honestly, I have not felt this good since I got sick, I feel

normal! So yes, i think you can have a longer 3 month flare but get back to

being better.

I was utterly distraught and thought that nothing was going to work, but thing

turned around big time. Having the antibiotics really make a difference makes me

more convinced that the diet helps by starving the bad bacteria, because why

else would I feel so much better if it wasn't bacterial related? My GI was

shocked to see that my CRP and SED rate were finally normal after not ever

reaching normal levels since I got sick.

So yes, I think that you can have a longer 3 month flare and get better. For my

case, it wouldn't have happened with the help from the meds, but I know everyone

is different.

Feel better soon!!

Take care,

Amber

Thanks for the feedbAck. I remember taking antibiotic before a Mexico trip as

precaution last year and felt great during the whole trip.

I will ask my dr for an rx! Humira was the first med I tried and it never

kicked in. Prednisone worked once really well but it seems like it is not doing

much this time arround (third round). My second round of prednisone failed

miserably which is when i started scd 5 mo ago.
