Update and question on verbal stimming - yeast related?

I wanted to briefly update those who have been so helpful to me with

the start of this diet and my 16 year old son with autism.

It's been approximately 9 weeks, although more precisely, 7 weeks at

100% compliance on the diet.

About 2 1/2 weeks ago, we saw our first improvements.

Sleep! Our son has always had very disrupted sleep but has become

worse in the last year or so. Puberty? He'd go to sleep quite easily

but would almost always awaken between 12:00 - 2:00 am and often stay

awake for the rest of the night. Pacing and talking. Sometimes

agitated but often just a need to walk and talk, read books, etc.

About 2 1/2 weeks ago, he began to sleep for 9 hours straight.

Miracle. This continued for 16 days. It was wonderful.

Prior to changing his diet, we agreed to try a series of medications

(12 in all at different times) to help him to sleep through the

night. Not one helped. Most made him quite agitated/activated. It's

really incredible a change in foods had the effect we were looking for

with medications that can cause so many side effects.

BM's! Our son's BM's were typically every 3-4 days. After about 4

weeks on the diet (and with great help from mg citrate and vit c),

he began having well formed stool daily. Never thought we'd see that.

Presently, in the last 4-5 days, our son's sleep patterns have

changed. Ugh. He'll still go to sleep easily but awaken around 3:00

am - for the day. Very talkative but in almost an

obsessive/compulsive pattern. A verbal stim or tic, really. Repeating

the same thing over and over. Pacing, flipping through two books at a

time, without really looking at them. Just feels a need to do it.

Very anxious but is so worked up, can't get back to sleep.

He's always done this to a certain extent but it's elevated. Taken to

a new height.

He's taking a large dose of vitamin c to help with various things.

However, I read somewhere that large doses of vit c can cause

irritability, activation. Wonder if I should reduce the vit c.

I don't think this is another yeast die-off but maybe.

No changes in diet at all.

Sorry it's so long - hoping someone might have some thoughts to pass

on.

Thanks

I honestly don't know if the vitamin C could be causing this. Did you increase

that dose recently? Or has he taken the same dose for a long time?

I know that magnesium citrate might be the most helpful form of mag for helping

with constipation, but it may contribute to sleeplessness for some. I know it

does that to me... if I take it before bedtime. Tamaro actually clued

me in that the mag citrate might be the culprit, and suggested I switch to

magnesium glycinate. I will have to go back and search for the message she sent

me, explaining why.... and I'll send it to you off list. The glycinate form

doesn't have the same laxative effect, though.

Are you using probiotics? SCD yogurt?

You *could* just be seeing another round of die-off at this point.... it's hard

to know. Some kids cycle through that numerous times. Sounds like your instincts

are telling you that it's not... so I'm not sure. Did baths with epsom salts

help him before with die-off symptoms?

I will go search for that message on the magnesium.
