Peggy, You've found a home. Stay a little while, read what is here, and you

will learn everything you need to know. Here's some answers, tho not in

order. Can't answer about your Insurance. Someone will, though. The MGB

will help with respiratory problems, as will anything that causes major

weight loss. No, you will be able to eat most foods, and what you can't eat

most people report not wanting anymore anyway. The vitamins are in capsule

form, not liquid. We manage somehow. The depression will get better as your

esteem rises, and there's no problem with getting a little pharmaceutical

help, either. Your surgeries will not stop the MGB, many of us have had

similar procedures. The hotel runs $39-79 a night, thru MedStay, so it won't

break the bank. And about the sex. . . I'll sure let cha know!!!

Welcome. Enjoy. This is the best group you could ask for. PhillyJude

, gosh girl, is there any thing else that you will have to handle. You

had better keep those hurricanes away. You and Kimi can just drive here and

stay with me. There will always be room at this INN... Dogs, cats, and all.

I know how you feel, don't you just wish you could go be with everyone for

everything??? LOL I want to come to Texas too, but after the hurricane

season. haha.

You take care and let us know if you have to evacuate.

Pray you don't.

That would be great to meet you, also!! Again, if it's more

expensive, you can fly into Portland. My sister's house can house

you, your husband and daughter. In fact, you'd have your own floor

of the house, it's so big!

Talk with you soon,

Welcome . I have a very dear friend that always ask me if I am

healthier and better off then I was when I had surgery. I always have to

reply yes. It helps me stop obsessing so much about the weight. 210 lbs

is soooo much better then 310 lbs. I realize it isn't perfect but it is

better and healthier. Strive for the extra weight loss but don't beat

yourself up about it either.

How are your mechanics? Any chance you have stapkle line disruption

or any such? What is your protein supplement regimen? What do you try

, I'd also ask how is your exercise? There is no secret to

continuing the weight loss. At this stage, its a calories game. You

have to take in less and burn more to lose the remaining pounds. At

this point, however, its all work on your part. The surgery got off

the first 100, now you have to work for the rest. The formula that

worked for me-eating frequent small mostly protein based meals every

few hours, minimizing the snacking, lots of water and regular heart

pumping exercise.

How do I know if I have a staple line disruption? I eat one protein bar a day

(16 gr.) and then try to get in about 12-14 more oz. in meat form. I know it's

not enough. I do sometimes take the Isotonix vitamins and I also take the daily

400 mg. of iron. I don't eat right and old habits are definitely back.

Who was your doctor? Which iron is that you're taking? Are you

taking additonal calcium over the Isotonix? Protein supplement?

To find out, you would have a scope. Do you have any acid reflux or

new things going on besides more volume? Personally, Old Faithful

went off in my pouch before I really noticed more volume. I didn't

have acid and then KABLOOEY! Pouch full of acid. Nothing subtle about

it. But not everyone " feels " anything, except a gradual increase in

volume.

I know I need to exercise. I still belong to Curves, but haven't gone in a

while. I do travel two weeks each month for business and try to go swimming at

the hotels and walking in the warmer climates. But when I'm home in Kansas

City, I don't do much, if any, exercise. I am convinced it's the key. I snack

way too much and feel I am a failure and would hate to think I personally

shelled out $25,000 for this and didn't achieve my goal. But like you said, the

surgery made me loose the first 100 , now the rest is up to me. I am so worried

I will gain some back and don't want to. What does your protein based meals

consist of mostly?

I take a Calcium supplement from Isotonix as well, when I take it, which isn't

often. I can't remember the specific Rx of Iron, but it's a capsule that I only

take once daily and it's easy on the stomach. The only Protein I get is in food

and a Zone Protein Bar 1x daily. I don't have acid reflux at all which is a

blessing as I use to have it before surgery. I honestly feel my surgery is

doing it's job, it's just me who needs to get back on track. Are there any

symptoms that would indicate I would need to be scoped?

The only way I suspected that I had a staple line disruption was that I

went from eating about 6 ounces at a meal to eating almost 20 ounces in a

meal. I also had started gaining some of the weight back.

,

We started in a similar place, 310 and 5'3 " here. My bypass length

is 125 cm, my stoma was and is 1.2 cm, and my pouch started out at

approximately 30 cc and a month ago (27 months out) it was 35 cc. My

surgery was about five months before yours, 09/17/01. However, I did

get down well PAST my goal. I'd like to share my " secrets " in the

hopes that you will find something useful in here.

1) Whey protein shakes. I consider two 30 gram shakes a day the BARE

MINIMUM. I strive for three, and on tough days when all I want is

sugarsugarsugar, I do four. These are the no-sugar, no-carb, no-fat

ones, made with water ONLY... no syrups, no fruit, no milk (all of

those things tempt me back to sugar, though I'll admit, I've never

even made one up with milk! Yes, sugar-free syrups can make you want

sugar.) Favorites include the whole Nectar line, a few Sci-Fit

flavors, and a single Stack flavor.

2) Exercise. Every day. No excuses. I started at 2 weeks post-op,

and didn't stop with at least ONE HOUR A DAY until I had my plastics

at 10 months out. Now I exercise 3 to 5 times a week.

3) Protein meals? I don't eat " protein meals " . I don't count ANY

protein from food, though I figure I probably see about a third of

the protein grams from the food I do eat. See #1, above. That said,

I do try to eat protein FIRST at sit-down meals to fill me up

better/longer, but I do eat other things I enjoy, including (gasp)

complex or even once in a while, simple carbs.

4) Water/fluids. Three liters a day, minimum. I do drink some diet

soda now, but not " brown " calcium-stone formers.

5) Real vitamins. Isotonix is crap (after a careful evaluation and

discussion with the manufacturers, I stand by my conclusions). Very

expensive useless stuff, too. Have a look at my website (scroll down

a couple of weeks) to find my Isotonix expose.

http://www.ziobro.us/Blogger/WLS.html And no, I don't sell a

different vitamin product or otherwise profit from slamming

Isotonix, I just worry about our health and don't want to see

anybody in our community wasting money on stuff that's not even

going to preserve their current level of health.

6) Real calcium. Citracal Plus is my favorite, but others like other

supplements and that's fine. As long as it's calcium citrate, and as

long as you're taking at least 2000 mg a day of it. No coral

calcium, no Tums, no Viactiv. And no single daily dose of 500 mg, or

single daily dose of 2000 mg, either... you can only use about 500

mg at a time, and you need 1500+ mg regardless of age or gender. We

can't take calcium out of food anymore, for the most part, and

supplements are REQUIRED to protect your bones and heart.

7) Attitude. You paid $25,000 of your own money for the surgery and

you're not doing EVERYTHING you can to succeed? You might want to

check out some talk therapy... I certainly had to to get over my

failure mentality (and I'm not totally there, but at least I'm not

undermining myself at every turn, every day).

My surgeon set his goal for me at 160, which seemed too high for me

to me when I was 310. I got all the way down to 126. With some

ulcers and some slacking habits, I've gained back to 158. Guess

what? My plastic surgeon saw me two weeks ago, after not seeing me

for about six months. He went ON and ON about how perfect my body

size is right now. I feel FAT because my size 6s don't fit anymore,

but if Dr. Egrari thinks I'm a knockout in size 10s, I'm trying to

find it in me to trust him. He's always been trustworthy before, and

he cares deeply about us (his bariatric reconstructive cases), and

me in particular, so I know he's probably right. He's certainly one

of the few professionals I know who IS both concerned and

knowledgeable about body aesthetics.

Anyway, you CAN do this. You CAN take your surgery back and make it

work for you. You DON'T have to be the statistical norm, losing 50%

of your excess weight and then having a 10-20% regain on top of that

(that's the RNY average, five years post-op). For you, that means

your loss should have been around 80 pounds (50% excess) and then

that your regain should be 16-32 pounds. Are you going to be happy

with 246 to 262 as your final weight from 310? No way was *I* going

to be happy with that! I consider 160 my ABSOLUTE MAX long-term

weight. That's keeping off 90% of excess (at one point, I was down

108% of my excess weight).

Here's my vitamin/mineral/protein regime.

Upon awakening: 1 Chromagen Forte* (iron) & Rx meds

In the car on the way to work: protein shake #1

10 am: 2 Citracal Plus (630 mg calcium citrate)

12 noon: lunch, chased with 2 Citracal Plus

2 pm: 2 Citracal Plus, 2 packets Coromega, 1 Centrum chewable adult

multi-vitamin

3 pm: protein shake #2

4 pm: snack

5 pm: 1 Centrum chewable adult multi

6 pm: in the car on the way home, protein shake #3 (sometimes)

7 pm: supper chased with Rx meds

8 pm: 2 Citracal Plus

late evening: protein shake #3 or #4

10 pm: 2 sugar-free Fiber Choice chewables

bedtime: 2 Citracal Plus

* My doctor just changed my iron so that I'm only taking it the week

of my period. So I'll probably move a calcium dose in there and drop

it during the day.

I give myself a 1 cc (1000 mcg) Vitamin B-12 shot every 7 to 14

days. Citracal Plus has more Vitamin D than I need, so in the summer

months, I take plain Citracal instead for two doses, with no Vitamin

D.

Hope this helps!

,

I for one want to thank you for your very informative detailed post

about your experience, habits, opinions, and vitamin, etc.

regimine. It is so helpful for newbies and us old folks to compare

routines w/others'. It helps me remember everything important. It

is no wonder why you have been so successful. Thanks very much.

Dear Tammy,

I live in Delaware and have a 20 year old daughter , she is off to adult

clinic right now, I can't go as I have to work. She is doing a good job of

taking care of herself, but still needs mom sometimes. I am glad you found this

list and I pray that is doing good. I also have a 17 year old son ncf,

but hormones raging.

I also homeschooled all my kids (I have a 22 year old daughter and 3 grandkids).

Have a good day.
