Addressing the Need for Real Information about Highly Mobile Populations:The Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers (MSFW) Descriptive Profiles Project

A LIVE WEBCAST PRESENTED BY:

Alice Larson, PhD Larson Assistance Services

SUMMARY

Many health centers struggle with the fact that program funding and development are often dependent on data about their population of focus. Gathering descriptive information regarding need and the utilization of services can be difficult for any community. However, with the overlay of migration and disrupted living situations, gathering such real-time data can be especially challengingMeaningful population data is not only useful for program funding, such data is also necessary for individuals working in migrant health to determine future trends that can affect health services delivery and formulation of health care plans, staffing decisions, outreach activities, preventive care emphases, budgeting and appropriate service hours. For both of these reasons, there is a real need to obtain descriptive and accurate information regarding the migrant population. This webcast will present a project that tested three innovative avenues for real-time data collection. These three methods employ systems that can be self-sustaining, providing continual, timely updates on the MSFW population at a local level where such information is most useful. In this session, these three methods will be described, along with a discussion of their limitations and projections for future projects. Data gathered via these methodologies from individuals working daily in migrant health will also be shared.
