I guess I don't fit in this group now. My sons diagnoses were changed from AS/bipolar/ADHD to bipolar/ADHD/ ODD/moderate receptive language disorder/severe expressive language disorder. Now I am totally lost on what support group I should be on. This has been a very good group to belong to, very encouraging and willing to listen to the good and not so good. Thanks and take care!

As a child my son ate only certain foods,

e.g., wieners, hamburgers, chicken fingers, fries, mac & cheese, rice,

pizza, among other things. He would not eat roast, steak, ham, chicken,

fish, most vegetables and fruits. Now, there are very few foods he won’t

eat!

My son has never met a food he didn't like. When he was a

baby he went through physical therapy due to being so heavy his upper muscles

didn't strengthen. For a while he went through an unusual phase where he

wouldn't eat meat if the bone had been removed first. That's over with though.

My brother who is autistic mostly eats pasta. It's been that way since he was really young.

Bipolar/ODD/ADHD with a moderate receptive language disorder and severe expressive language disorder. The language part is from recent testing with a speech therapist.

Tyler seems to almost crave carbs, pasta, rice, fries, potatoes, bread.

Unfortunately, they love him back – he is extremely overweight.

I think most AS children are "picky" eaters...eat only certain foods ....my son was this way...in order to get him to eat ham...we told him one Easter it was chicken....we were at a friend's house...the kids ate in the sun room.... yells out...mom this chicken is good, can I have some more....Of course my girlfriends mother was about to say ...we don't have any chicken...until I hushed her..... A year later ...he learned it was ham and had no problem eating it.

eats much better now...he loves mushrooms, green beans, celery, carrots...although he wont' eat them cooked....he eats cooked corn..hamburgers and now cheeseburgers (but don't put ketsup on them if there is cheese), steak, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese...spagetti (sometimes with sause, sometimes with only cheese sometimes with butter) rice, apples, melon, scrambled eggs. He even likes rye bread. He is picky but not picky...like he would never eat a casserole.....Who knows....but I know I was told a lot of AS children don't like the soft white foods and I know a lot of them have certain foods that they will only eat...I am just glad has a little bit of a variety.....of course he loves his pizza and chicken nuggets and fries and could live on both.

mentioning what the other one said. I guess that would affect his

opinion and I want a fresh one. Thanks!

There is another side to this coin. ASD specialists are used to other

professionals with less familiarity with ASDs interpreting things in

ways they would not, so that will not phase them. Furthermore, the

information your psychiatrist has may be helpful, even if the

neuropsych doesn't agree with the interpretation. The more

information going in, the more complete the dx will be. Also, it

lessens the believability of your dx if you have hidden or not

included info that others would consider pertinent. Unless you have

out-of-it school administrators, they will notice the absence of input

and be skeptical.

This is important. The difference between the dx may make the

difference in whether your child is put in with behaviorally disturbed

(BD) kids or emotionally disturbed (ED) kids. Typically, you don't

want to mix these two populations because the BD kids will beat up

on/tease the ED kids. This is what has happened with the poster with

the child in with all the mean kids in the residential treatment.

This is the first thing I had to straighten out with my son and the

school district.

Unfortunately my brother is too. I think it's a combination of the food he eats and his medication. I remember how thin he was as a child. With my son I monitor how much he eats. I try to make sure he eats enough but doesn't over do it. So far his dr 's have always said he was right where he should be, well except as a baby when he was severely overweight.

HFA is autism that takes a curve for the better. These kids start out dx'd with autism and for some reason, things click together and they improve enough to be considered high functioning. After that, the main thing you might notice is that kids with HFA will have a speech delay or effects of having one. On tests, they tend to do better with non verbal skills while kids with AS tend to do better with verbal skills.

My son (11 yr old, Aspergers) doesn't belong with behaviorally or emotionally disturbed kids. It would not be a good outcome if he was placed with either, given his challenging communication skills. I don't know if that's what you're implying below, but if so, just wanted to make that point. High functioning kids with Aspergers and not other significant diagnoses on top of it shouldn't be label behaviorally or emotionally disturbed.

If that's not what you're trying to say, I apologize in advance

My 11 yr old Aspie son will eat foods in all of the food groups. There isn't a large variety of fruits (cantaloupe, watermelon, apples, honeydew, bananas) and vegetables though (mainly raw carrots, cooked broccoli, and cooked cauliflower - and recently, the cooked veggies have been a harder sell but he'll still eat them.) He eats a variety of meats and definitely grains. I'm finding the older he gets, the more willing he is to try new things. He finally tried pumpkin pie a couple of holidays ago and now he absolutely loves it. I think it was good he stumbled upon something he always shunned but ended up loving b/c it helps him open his mind a bit about trying other things.

That's Great ...if the doctor feel okay about his weight then he is okay....my son was a chubby baby too! He was 6 1/2 lbs. at birth but let me tell you that did not last and he cried and cried and cried...I thought I was going nuts...TG Poppy was there to help me!!!!'

God does have a plan....he brought my son into the world and loaned me Poppy to help and assist me in coping with a new child at the age of 41. God does work miracles and Poppy is with the Father because he returned to his faith....again God had a plan...he brorught him to our house and he went back to church....Amen

That so cute..so sweet and kind and that is exactly how i feel......we can all learn from each other and i think some things can be applied to ALL kids!!! Even ones w/out any dx....LOL!!!!

You should hear the stories I get from my 2 friends with teenagers ....15 and 18 and 19. I can relate things they say w/ my son 12 3/4.....almost a teenager. Funny how life works.

Now I have a story....my son "hangs" with a boy 15 and sometimes with the neighbor boy who is 17 (known this boy since he was 4 and my son has been with him since he was 3). Anyways....I finally told my son one night that if the boys go to s...he can go to....well...my son comes home around 7 p.m. ...we say something wrong...he says no ..they are going to wendys...I said you can go....my son says ...No mom...I don't trust his driving!!!

My mouth dropped...I was so proud of him...He loves this kid and the other one...but he didn't feel comfortable to be in the car with them...so he did not go...BIG BIG STEP for him.

Which brings another thought to my constantly thinking brain....since he has anxiety about things, can be a picky eater, a lot of fears, didn't go in the car with the 2 "coolest" kids (he idolizes the one who is 15).....then maybe my inner gut feelings are correct about drugs....no mind you I will constantly talk to him about drugs and keep my eyes opend...but there are kids in the neighborhood doing drugs...one was sent to boot camp for 6 months and is supposively back on the drugs...and my son is aware of all this ....he even came home one night because the kids at the lake were bugging him for a soda can....to make a "pipe".....my son thru DARE is more aware of all these things....anyways...it gives me a good feeling that Drugs may not be one of our battles to overcome....but of course....I will never turn my back on this subject or close my eyes....I will always talk to him about it and if I keep him active....I think we will do well in this

area.

I think as a society right now, there are big problems with people eating way too many simple carbs. I'm not a nutrition expert, but I know this is a pervasive problem across the United States. 2/3 of people are either overweight or obese. So I think our diets as a nation are in need of lots of help, I don't think it has to do specifically with Aspergers.
