Marla, sweetie, it's time. Probably past time. I don't know about Colorado, but my neuro just filled out a form from the BMV (I had to pick the form up myself) & I took it back, paid a small fee & got a placard. The first time he just wrote for one year, but when it was time to renew it, he wrote permanent disability. That time I got a licence plate & a placard; I keep the placard in my purse & use it when someone else takes me out to eat or whatever. I don't always park in handicap spots, especially if there is a regular spot pretty close. I figure someone else might need it more than I do. But it's awfully nice to have the plate or card on those bad days. And it's a must if I want to go places like the State Fair. Even though I took my scooter, if I hadn't been able to use the handicapped lot, I would have had to park across the street every time we went because it was so crowded. I'd have used up my batteries just getting into the Fairgrounds & back.

OK, this may sound stupid, but when do you feel like it’s time to ask for a handicap parking sticker, if I have to park way out in the parking lot, then I’m lucky to get through the store, especially if it’s been a long day, then try to get back out to the car and put the food in the car, I had a couple of days, I just sat in the car and cried, I didn’t think I was going to make it home. My legs get so heavy now, I find myself dragging the left, and then get that SOB sensation, I just want to sit right there and cry!

I called home one day and told my son to be ready to get the food out of the car (since he and his brother eat it all it’s the least he can do) but I drove in the garage and went straight to bed, slept a couple hours before I could even move. So do you all already have one, and is it hard to get? Thanks, Marla

Marla,

I'm with Rose on this one. It is definitely past time for you to get one. My Neurosurgeon filled out the form for me (he actually had them at his office) and I just had to stick it in an envelope and mail it in. It didn't cost me anything at all. My doctor wrote it out as permanently disabled but asked me to only use it as long as I felt I needed it. I am no longer able to drive, so I leave mine in my mom's car (she is the one who usually drives me everywhere). If there is a close parking space available, we will park there instead of handicap...just as Rose does, but most times it proves to be invaluable. Especially for hospital/doctor visits that don't have valet parking available. Once I mailed the form in, it took only about a week before I received it back in the mail.

Good Luck and Hugs!

-Marla,

I had sarc for about 5 years (and it had damaged my lungs), before I asked my

Doctor how I could get a handicap sign...........he responded with ""I wondered when

you were going to ask for one.......you have needed it for at least 4 years!"" He

immediately wrote out a paper (like a request) for me and I took it to the License

Bureau and immediately got my sign......no problem. If I am feeling well and do not

have a lot of shopping to do, then I do not use it.............because I know there are

others out there who are worse off than me, but if I need it, I use it. Hope this

helps...........

Marla, you should already have been offered one. Get the boys to stop at the DMV and get the application, and fill out your part-- you may even want to fill out the MD's part-- then all he has to do is sign it! It's not hard to get one, you just go back to the DMV with the application, and in Calif (we pay $6.00 one time) they give you the one that hangs on the rear view mirror. Or we can pay $20 a year and get the permanent license plate. I opt for the cheap one so that I can use it in my car or when I'm in our truck.

Now-- as far as you having to sit in the car, or work up the energy to get into the store, too worn out to do what you came to do-- been there, done that... My dear friend, ask for what you need-- and DO NOT beat yourself up overneeding to get the sticker- it is a godsend!!

Love to you,

Tracie

Hi

Darlene,

Thanks,

yes I’ve been thinking about it, but have been afraid that he would say,

you don’t need it, well today I had to get poked and prodded with test

that will hopefully enable me to get Humeria,(not sure I’m spelling that

right) so while I was getting my flu shot and TB test, I asked the Med.

Assistant, if she would ask the Doctor if I could get one, and I started out

with, do you know my history, and she said No, so then I went on to say, have

you ever read the book, “but you look so good” and she said No, so at

that point I just asked her to ask the doctor. Because I am the type of person

that will not leave the home without make up,(because if I got in an accident

they would take one look at me and say, she’s a goner, and move on) J,

So I felt

strange asking her, guess I’ll just wait and see what my doctor says.

My doctors

office called yesterday and said my doctor signed the handicap parking, she

said he signed the permanent one, so I never have to renew it, and I was

worried he would say something, but after last night there is no doubt I need

one, I went to a hockey game with my husband, didn’t get up a lot, and at

the end I could not move my left leg at all, my right one was pretty weak too,

so my husband had to drag me out of there, I’m sure people were thinking I

was a drunk, and it hurts when you force it at that pace!  So today I feel like

hell, been sleeping a lot, tomorrow will be a better day!

Marla,

I knew your doc wouldn't give you a hard time. I'm glad he filled out the permanent one. Don't be afraid to use it...it can definitely be a lifesaver. It sounds like it would have been a great benefit for you to have last night. I hope you feel better soon...in the mean time, take it easy on yourself!

Marla, that's what we do in Indiana; I would assume the same out there. You might want to call first, just to make sure you have everything you need. I'm so glad you did it. As everyone has said, there may be times you don't need to use it, but like a poster I once saw on giving blood said: Blood is like a parachute: you may never need it, but it had better be there when you do! This is a little less dramatic, but the same principle.

Marla,

Next time this happens, have that hubby of yours go get a wheelchair from the courtesy desk. They have to have them by law.

You

know Tracie I did not even think of a wheelchair, funny how that is, like the

times I get lost and don’t remember I have a cell phone in my purse? Next time

I will do that, and I don’t think I will be going again until I get the

handicap parking, it was a long drag out to the car, by that time it just plain

hurt! I find my balance is really off, and that with a really weak left leg, I

Marla,

I know what you mean. I feel like I am drunk and wonder what people are thinking. Wondering if they are thinking I am a secret drinker, and having to hold onto things. I think the one thing that really gets me is when I don't gauge things right and hit my arms on the walls and I wonder why the heck I did not see it. I don't know if others have this but I have trouble with my fingers and not being able to flip through papers at work or open things and get so frustrated. So then I have to tell myself to stop, stop getting upset, breathe deeply and start over and then it works.

that is perfect, let me know when you have them done, I will be the first to

buy one!  I know people must wonder about me, you know I can not stand in one

place, I just can’t, I fall to one side then the other, and it’s not like I fall

to the ground, my feet shift without telling my brain or maybe it’s the other

way around??  So I always look drunk, people will like grab my elbow and say

are you OK, ya I’m fine I just can’t stand or walk or sit or do anything for

very long?  Such is life?  Marla

Marla, I really need to get going on my t-shirt (maybe

hats & visors, too?) design: " I'm not drunk---I just have

Neurosarcoidosis! " Great conversation starter.

Thanks

Rose, after the other night at the Hockey game I will be glad I have it, in

fact I don’t think I will go to another hockey game until I get it, as my

husband had to drag me to the car, I’m sure everyone just thought I was a drunk

Marla, that's what we do in Indiana;

I would assume the same out there. You might want to call first, just to

make sure you have everything you need. I'm so glad you did it. As

everyone has said, there may be times you don't need to use it, but like a

poster I once saw on giving blood said: Blood is like a parachute:

you may never need it, but it had better be there when you do! This is a

little less dramatic, but the same principle.

Marla,

Do you use a cane? I know that I have to have mine with me when I leave my apartment, because I can't always stay upright without it. I also hold onto another person's arm if I am with someone and use the cane in my other hand to keep me more steady and upright. Ya do whatcha gotta do!

Hugs,

, I got a cane, but had to quit using it because of the arthritis & tendonitis in my hands & right elbow. Even using the electric carts is a challenge because I have to keep switching hands for the speed control, eventually using my fist or forearm. It's very frustrating. I saw a hand specialist last year about my left thumb joint & he mentioned surgery, but I didn't even consider it then. They had previously tried a steroid injection, but couldn't get into the joint, so I just went with a new brace, which helps quite a bit. But there are times I can't wear the brace & the pain really worsens quickly, so maybe I should revisit the idea of surgery. Apparently there is a high rate of success, so it might be worth it. Anybody have any experience with it? My thumb joint is just bone on bone now. I did look up the Synvisc, but it said it was only approved for knees. Oh, woe is me!
