Last year we had a whole house filter installed as well as a reverse osmosis

system...it is the under the sink version made by kinetico...how do I find out

if this is good enough? Also now that I'm thinking our dentist prescribed

fluoride tablets because our water doesn't have fluoride added, is this a huge

no no????? UGH how will I ever get this all straight?

[ ] Re: Regarding Water, Poland Spring?

Some of the shower heads are good. A friend in the neighborhood got

rid of eczema with just that.

Reverse osmosis filters are not all the same. I really researched

this and highly recommend the Costco one I post all the time. 5 step

filtration rocks. It takes longer to install. I literally hired a

rocket scientist to do it and it took him 2 hours. You cannot get a

whiole house system that will filter out fluoride...too big a

molecule. If you find one please post it (I'll likely be divorced if

you do...LOL) The shower thing is a good idea even if you get the

whole house filter. The small amount of fluoride in our water was

bleeding our copper pipes and showing up in the shower. A common

problem when copper meets fluoride.

Liz I hope you enjoy a piece of delicious birthday cake today but of

course the kiss from your little one was the cherry on top! Thought

you would enjoy the following video from youtube. (I had to smile

thinking that you probably are wondering if the aliens are wearing

Oh honey, I wish you would tell my poor husband that. The filter I am

referring to at costco is the 5 step one. It retails for just under

$300. The have a less expensive one also but it is not as good.

FIJI is pretty good but it actually has a ton of good minerals in

it...likely too many for our kids to handle. We used that when we

were waiting for the RO filter to be installed and my son wound up

with wierd skin stuff during baths from it I believe as it was the

only new thing we did then.

I think there are issues cooking with pellegrino.

Just say no to fluoride tablets!

Drs data has a water testing kit for $129 that tests for fluoride and

the rest. The cheaper test does not test for fluoride.

I promise, my kids will not be wearing those outfits any time soon.

We will leave Jersey before it comes to that. You gotta live life.

Okay fluoride tablets are outta here and I will order the test kit. Do cavities

increase without the fluoride? That is all we need is more visits to the

dentist!!!!

Interesting about the Fiji and your son's skin.

I wonder if the gallon bottles of distilled water that you find at the

grocery store are any good to at least cook with, anyone know??

those who DRINK Distilled water--- do you actually LIKE the taste of it??

Personally speaking-- I HATE HATE HATE the taste of distilled water and

can't imagine drinking it. I am a heavy water drinker (always filtered and

bottled never from the tap) and I need a good tasting water, and can't stand

the

thought of the taste of distilled water to enjoy as drinking water.

Per Weston Price, a dentist who traveled the world observing

populations in their native habitats in the 1920s and 30s dental

health is a great reflection of overall health. Fluoride occurs

naturally in water...that is the good stuff. Fluorine is the stuff

the U.S. gov't allowed to be added to water supplies in the 1950s. At

the time two things were at play: 1) car manufacturing skyrocketed

and fluorine is a wasteproduct of steel manufacturing and 2) concerns

about dental health were on folks minds because the Depression years

earlier caused fewer resources, I think we saw rickets in the 1940's

(this the whole calcium.milk craze)etc. So, the gov't approved this

and a study about fluoride (not ine) and dental carry reduction was

touted to sell this to the public. The neon writing fluoride alert

sites will tell you the whole fluoride thing was a conspiracy between

government, banking and industry. I do not know about all of that.

Perhaps when it was done it was safe. But now it really is not and it

is a big problem. My town is not fluoridated but I think I know why.

Fluoride is a metal trapper and it turns out while fluoride is not in

our town water directly (it and similar stuff chemically is

indirectly via pesticide run off) there are a whole lot of metals in

our water, including mercury. Even the technically unfluoridated

areas actually fluoridate. They can do that legally up to 1 ppm or

ppb I forget. Problem is low levels like that are being studied and

they are finding an increase in osteosarcoma for boys. They have

found nothing in girls but I doubt anyone is looking hard enough.

Fluorine affects the endocrine system so God only knows what it is

doing to our girls and likely any future babies they have.

As for the dentist, there are holistic dentists out there. I switched

to one this year. I did it because they use digital xrays for less

radiation exposure, less toxic numbing stuff and have ventilation

systems to reduce mercury and other neurotoxic substance exposure.

Mine was terrific and was comparably priced to my other dentist. She

also happened to be a better dentist and saved my tooth from the

whole root canal thing. You may want to google and see if there is

one in your area. They are not all the same though and there is some

sort of accrediting agency that will send you a list of questions for

when you set up your appt to sort of weed out a bad choice. I will

also warn you, some of these dentists, like mine, do some wierd

tests. I forget what they are called but it is like this thing where

they are testing your energy. That falls into the crazy voodoo

category for me but she was a good dentist and if she asked me to

stand on my head to save that tooth I'd likely have done it.

Lastly, when getting fillings, etc., mercury is bad but some of the

white replacements have their own issues. I am told there are blood

tests that can be done to address biocompatibility.

Sorry this is so long.

The 5 step ro filter from costco and a good GE whole house filter are

the best things I know.

Afterward if still freaked you can test the water with a kit for $129

Last May consumer reports did testing on water filters. You need to look

at their magazine at a library or sign up for their online access to see

the whole article, but the short story is this:

For reverse osmosis, their top pick was the Kenmore Elite 38556 at $300.

For whole house, their top pick was Whirlpool WHCF-DWHV at $35.

They did not test the kinetico filter, at least under that name.

Generally whole house filters are going to be best at reducing sediment,

and possibly chlorine and other contaminants if they contain activated

charcoal. An RO filter is usually going to be *much* more effective in

reducing a wide spectrum of chemicals, bacteria, and elements. I am

planning to add both a whole house filter, and an RO unit that will feed

the water dispenser and ice maker in my refrigerator.

If your water is fluoridated you still may want to consider the

costco one. Unfortunately Consumer Reports like others, thinks

fluoride is OK.
