Assistant Project Manager

Community Participatory Approach to Measuring Farmworker Pesticide Exposure

Pending final notice of award from the National Institutes of Health, we expect to begin a new research project on May 1, 2006. The goals for this community based research project, Community Participatory Approach to Measuring Farmworker Pesticide Exposure are to: (1) use community-based participatory processes to design an acceptable and effective strategy for collecting valid and reliable data on routine farmworker pesticide exposure, (2) document pesticide exposure levels and variability in these levels among farmworkers in North Carolina using urinary biomarkers, and (3) disseminate risk information in culturally and educationally appropriate formats to farmworkers concerning pesticide exposure.

Community Participatory Approach to Measuring Farmworker Pesticide Exposure is a collaboration among Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the North Carolina Farmworkers Project, Student Action with Farmworkers, and several migrant and community clinics in North Carolina. The Assistant Project Manager will be an employee of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Wake Forest University is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Many of the project activities will be conducted in eastern North Carolina counties, located about 150 miles from Winston-Salem. Regular travel between the two areas will be required. The Assistant Project Manager will engage in substantial field work with farmworkers in the study counties.

The Assistant Project Manager is a full-time, professional position. This is a 2 year position, with continuation based on the availability of funding. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator, the Assistant Project Manager will support the project’s community participation activities (2006 and 2007), and assist in the collection of the longitudinal surveillance interviews from across the study counties (2007).

Minimum requirements for this position are a bachelor’s degree in social or behavioral science, public health, nursing or related field. Fluent speaking and writing ability in English and Spanish are required. The ideal candidate will have good communication and organizational skills, and some research training.
