Subject: " The Migrant Project " coming to DALLAS

I've been asked to spread the word about a photography exhibit and

educational seminar that will be taking place in Dallas this month. The

exhibit itself is called " The Migrant Project: Contemporary California

Farmworkers " and is described as an in-depth photojournalistic portrait

detailing the daily lives and struggles of today's California migrant

farmworkers. " More information about the exhibit is avaible at

http://rcnphoto.com/mpr.html. In conjunction with the exhibit, the

photographer, Rick Nahmias, is putting on a workshop for educators on using

the exhibit as a resource. I've copied the text of a flyer describing the

workshop in more detail below. It looks as though his intent is to talk

about tools and methods through which educators can incorporate discussions

of rural poverty and the human cost of feeding America. The photographer's

exhibit has also been made the basis of a multimedia curriculum for middle

and high school students, materials for which are available online through

an orginization called the Civics Center.

The workshop will Saturday, September 9th, in Dallas (the exhibit is going

on all month). There are only 45 spaces available, but apparently there are

quite a few of them them left. The workshop is free to educators who

educators who deal with Migrant issues in their curriculum or work in

schools with large representations of migrant families. Please contact me

directly for a word version of the workshop flyer.

Thanks,

Jen

WORKSHOP FLYER:

Rick Nahmias Photography and Facing History & Ourselves are pleased to

announce the Educators and Professional Development Workshop based on the

traveling exhibit " The Migrant Project. "

This Workshop is Free to Texas Educators!!!

And only available for one day!!!

This acclaimed exhibit will be experienced as an educational resource for

educators as well as for the professional development of organizations

interested in involving their members in active discussion and education

about

the human cost of feeding America. Through this three and a half hour

interactive multi-media workshop attendees are given the tools to bring

discussions and creative activities exploring rural poverty, and the issues

and legacies of America's farm workers into the classroom or workplace.

Involving the actual contents of this acclaimed exhibition, whose images

have

been presented on the floor of the United States Congress, and are now part

of

the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History at the

sonian Institution, this workshop was created in a special

collaboration

between the artist, Rick Nahmias, and the renowned education non-profit,

Facing History & Ourselves, whose aim over the last 27 years has been to

help

educators and students find meaning in the past and recognize the need for

participation and responsible decision making. It is presented by the

artist,

who has national experience bringing the subject of marginalized communities

to groups of all ages and backgrounds.

The contents of the workshop has been expressly designed to be hands-on and

experiential. Covering contemporary and historic issues, it uses a

mixture

of Power Point, film clips, music, plus pairing exercises, and break-out

sessions to give all participants opportunities to candidly discuss, and

hopefully better understand their feelings about issues such as immigration,

poverty, and the challenges we face remaining connected to the food we eat

and

those who supply it.

The workshop is approximately 3.5hours in length, and is limited to 45

participants. The workshop is free to educators who deal with Migrant

issues

in their curriculum or work in a school with a large representation of

Migrant

families. Participation is available to those who return the registration

form based on available space.
