g-tube use and potty training--need advice!

My son is on a g-tube at night and is nearly 2 years old. We won't

potty train him for at least several months but I am having a

difficult time figuring something out. How in the heck do you potty

train a kid who is attached to a tube all night? He can't get up in

the middle of the night to use the toilet. Will he just have to wake

us up in the middle of the night? Or do kids usually sleep all

night? But then, I guess most kids aren't fed liquid ALL night

either. So he probably will HAVE to pee at some point but he won't

know how to unhook himself from the tube. Help!!! Any knowledge out

there about this strange topic?

We aren't to the potty training stage yet, but is tube fed

also. I have heard from other moms that they put a little potty

right by the childs bed that they can use during the night if they

need. That way the child can do it by themselves and not need to be

unhooked.

Good luck,

Georgianna

Hi and Georgianna-

With my child that doesn't have CF, we still put a Goodnight pull up on

her at night. She won't wake up to go to the potty. She is one who

potty trained early and has no accidents during the day. Just nights.

So it can take a while even for kids with no cf or night feeds.

We are just now starting to potty train our soon to be 2 year old (Feb

16) during the day. She loves the potty, but is not big enough to get

up on there herself. So we purchased a little potty that she can use

and sometimes we even bring it into the living room. Sometimes she

doesn't make it to the potty and that makes her mad. She doesn't even

like to potty in her diaper during the day. But with CF and short gut,

you never know when it gonna hit her. She runs with her legs together.

Poor thing.

Don't rush, it will happen.

The only thing I can think of is to maybe keep him in a pull-up or

one of those goodnights by pampers I think. both are supposed to look

more like real underwear. MY youngest, Hunter is 2 1/2 will be 3 in a

couple of weeks and still doesn't stay dry through the night but is

completely potty trained during the day so it's regular underwear

during the day and pullups at night. Wyatt my cfer, didn't potty

train till 3 1/2. it was a long and difficult process. He wore pull

ups even during the day for awhile. The peeing process during the day

went well but the poops were VERY hard because he has never had a

solid poop EVER and so we had many accidents because he didn't get

there in time (grose as I was pregnant w/ Hunter and MAJOR morning

sickness especially while cleaning up Wyatt's smelly messes)

If that doesn't bother you try keeping him in pullups at night and

focus your positive energy into training during the day. The night

time will eventually come. Oh, and goodnights might be better because

they probably hold more liquid then pull ups. Christy

The responses to this issue seem to indicate to me that several of you

have kids on night feeds that are in beds. Emma is still in a crib at

age 2 1/2 and I anticipate that at some point, she will learn how to get

out or at least try to. As a result, at some point we are going to need

to switch to a bed. ly, I find the crib to be really convenient for

keeping her confined and close to the pump. She seems to be unaware of

the fact that she can't just walk away from the pump when she is hooked

up. I am worried that when we move her to a bed that she will be getting

out and walking away from the pump. She has actually pulled out the tube

doing this in the crib. I was just curious how other people have dealt

with this and if the transition to a big bed was made harder by being on

night feeds.

Thanks,
