Patti (2 wcf) does the same thing on milk. She can however tolerate yogurt and

cheeses. Our dietician told us that those two foods have their own types of

enzymes that help digest the lactose. So many who are only slightly lactose

intolerant can handle these foods. Best of luck in resolving your situation

with Noah.

On 1/16 we switched Noah from ensure to whole milk since he wasn't

eating much solid foods. Well he did fine up until late sat.

sfternoon then his poops started getting alittle softer. Then sunday

they started getting worse mucusy and very stinky. And about 6 a

day, I took him off the whole milk most of the day. But by evening

he was very hungry and would not take any ensure plus so i finally

gave him some milk. He woke up this morning with a little tiny messy

diaper from during the nite. But has been fine all day and has been

drinking milk all day. Then around 4:30 he had a messy, stinky

diaper. I am thinking that it is the bug that is going sround, but

i am also concerned with lactose intolerance. He has always ate 2-

4oz yogurts aday and ocassionally has had milk before. So i would

have thought he would have shown signs by now. My sister is lactose

intolerance and she can not even eat a little bowl of yogurt or ice

cream with out it effecting her. I am going to call his dietition

tomarrow and see what she thinks, but just wanted others opinions

also. He will absolutley not drink the ensure now that he has had

the whole milk. I also went up from 3 to 4 pancrecarb ms-8 maybe

that will help.

This sounds more like a malabsorption issue to me than lactose

intolerance. I have lactose intolerance and for me I get very severe

stomach cramps and gas but I have never had problems with my bowel

movements as a result of the lactose intolerance. I am sure it is

different for everyone but the fact that Noahs stools have mucus and are

stinky is a classic malabsorption sign and to my knowledge has nothing to

do with lactose intolerance. When Emma has a cold or bug, she often has

signs of malabsorption until it goes away so it could be that as well.

I hope this helps.

Most people with Lactose Intolerance can eat yogurt. I eat it all of the

time. It definately does not have a high lactose content. I never heard

about cheese being okay. There are alternatives to regular milk. Most

grocery stores sell Lactaid milk and there is a new one that came out

about four or five months ago both of which offer 100% lactose free

versions. I forget the name of the new product but it is made by Land O'

Lakes. Both of these are made in whole milk, skim and reduced fat

versions. It is more expensive than regular milk but the products where

you put drops in the milk or chewable tablets just really don't seem to

help a whole lot to eliminate all of the lactose. I have tried this and

I end up with very severe stomach cramps. Cream has the highest amount

of lactose. I once ordered hot chocolate at a restaurant which they

apparently had put whipped cream in and it had melted by the time I got

it. I took a few sips during my meal before it hit. I knew immediately

what it was. Cream is just the worst for people with lactose

intolerance. Anyway, I have no problems at all when I drink the Lactose

free milks.

I just thought this might be of interest.
