Guest guest
Hi, the link below leads to a great explanation of how the human immune system works. http://www.bio.com/newsfeatures/newsfeatures_features.jhtml? action=view & contentItem=97115510 & Page=1 Since the immune system of pwcf already works over-hours and it's overdoing in my opinion is one of the main reasons for CF related health problems, I don't like the idea of boosting the immune system even more with meds like echinacea. What's your take on this subject? Peace Torsten, dad of Fiona 5wcf

Guest guest
Hi Torsten; Thanks for the Immune System Primer. I keep trying to read such things to better understand the body ... immune system, essential fatty acids, etc. I agree with you that we don't fully understand how some products, like echinacea, may affect the CF body and so I too have avoided using it with my son with CF. I try to follow the rule, " First, do no harm. " I don't think it is as simple as the immune system just being in overdrive .... I think of it more as 'out of balance'. Yes, it overreacts in sending out neutrophils but in some other functions it is deficient ... such as not being able to get the antioxidant, glutathione, out of the cells to the extracellular space. There are whole chain reactions of chemical and mineral imbalances in the CF body that prevent the body from being able to deal with viral, bacterial and other environmental invasions. So, some aspects/functions of the immune system we would NOT want to boost. Other aspects may need boosting to help correct the balance. Unfortunately, it is way too complicated still. All we can do is keep chiseling away at the little things we do know and aim for improved balance. That's my take, M
Guest guest
Hello Torsten, I agree, after reading up on echinacea and how it works, it would seem inappropriate to give it to children with cf. However I think there may be benefits from other types of homeopathic interventions and we are just in the process of seeing a homeopath. I hope there will be benefits for our son and that our English doctors are willing to work together. At the moment it seems that our son`s peadiatrition looks upon them as " quacks " and that we are wasting our money on these types of interventions. I don`t expect a cure from them, but I do hope that Sonny benefits on the whole in the long term. I would like to know how your doctors look upon homeopathy and if they take it seriously or not. I hope you don`t mind me emailing you. Warm wishes to you and your family.
