In our on-going work (in what seems to be an uphill battle) to

improve the health of farmworkers and the mobile underserved, I know all of us come

across that amazing person who makes us wonder, “What would the migrants

in my community do without xxxxxx.” Let’s give that person

the recognition he or she deserves. Please nominate them for the MCN

unsung hero award. Thanks, Amy

RE: Unsung Hero

Recent events in the United States have highlighted how

vulnerable health care can be for the poor and underserved. During these times,

MCN looks to find an unsung hero who has displayed a longtime healthcare

advocacy for the mobile underserved.

Last year MCN honored Jerry , a Physician Assistant who has

worked for Golden Valley Health Centers (GVHC) for 30 years. Jerry is dedicated

to improving the health of patients by providing quality, primary health care

services to people regardless of language, financial or cultural barriers

–in a major agricultural area of the Central Valley of California. MCN

the national oldest and largest network for the mobile underserved established

its Annual Unsung Hero Award in 1991 as a way to honor one of the unrecognized

clinicians in the field of migrant health. The Award winner will receive their

award with an expense paid trip to the Annual Farm Worker Health Conference in San , TX,

later this year. Nominees for the Unsung Hero Award are distinguished by their

demonstrated dedication to migrant health, participation in a variety of areas

in migrant health care delivery, innovation in service delivery and prevention

strategies, clinical leadership, and lack of previous recognition for their

contributions to migrant health.

If you know of an “Unsung Hero” in your area, and wish

to submit their name for consideration please send us a paragraph describing

the nominee including why he or she embodies the characteristics of the Unsung

Hero Award.

Nominations should be received by MCN no later than March 17, 2006.

Dear

Amy,

The

unsung hero that comes to mind is Mr. Castro of the California Human

Development Corporation. He has

been able to overcome obstacles that are generated in working with several California

agra- business counties and provide vital health education services. Mr. Castro has worked for CHDC for

several years and

to my understanding has never been thanked by all of us in the Latino farm

worker community. He coordinates

federal programs which include health education and betterment. So, my nominee is Mr. Castro from

the California Human Development Corporation 91 Cernon Street in Vacaville

California 95688 (707) 624-0814.

Sincerely,

Rene Quintana
