Guest guest
Jennier, We just started GH and are also on a 6 days on, one day off schedule. I had wondered about it, especially since we just started. Our daughter, Abby, has been doing great with the shots and I was afraid the one day off might throw her back some, but it didn't seem to. After the first week when we took one day off, she asked if we were all done now and we had to tell her no. It seems almost more stressful to me to have to pick which day we're not going to give the shot and then see how she takes it when we start again. Since she seemed to handle it okay I guess it's not a big deal, but I wondered what the rationale was behind it and didn't really get any explanation from our doctor. Guest guest
- Hi this is s mom, I know you wrote this to , but We have started G H 3 days ago and we are doing the same as you 6 times a week and one day off, I am picking Saturdays for the day off, you said Abby is doing good, is she used to doctors and being poked alot? is going hysterical on me when giving the shot, I feel so bad for him, I think he thought he was going to only get the shot at the doctors that day and now he realizes that we are doing it at home, he is totally freaking out on me, I think the reason is because he has been through so much, 2 surgeries on his penis for hypospadias, he has had to be put to sleep to many times for an endoscope and colonoscopy..tubes in ears and well there is more it seems like when he gets sick we are back to the hospital and all he knows is getting poked or at just a sick appointment he ends up having to get poked for blood. He is not at all happy about this and now I feel like he is tramatized!!! I have talked with him about it and try to get him to help do the alcohol swab ...but when he knows it is fixing to happen he goes nuts and starts crying before I even get the shot ready!! He knows that we are going to either do it before bath then he doesn't want to take a bath or if he knows that we are going to do it after bath then he screams and doesn't want to get out! The look in his little eyes hurts me so bad and I am really getting sad for him but I know I have to be strong, do you have any advice, I know I can do it but I am so depressed right now for fear he is going to hate me!! He yells at me and calls me meanie and it hurts to see him like this?? Well sorry this is so long but just in need of help, he also has to go to the doctor and get his shots for kindergarten and the are going to have to give him 3 what if I have already used his arms? I am going to try to rotate it so I hope he will be able to do another site, he sreamed and jerked out of my arms last night with his sissy trying to hold him and I don't think I got to pinch up his skin enough and there was a big bruise on his leg, now he is really scared!! Any advice would help!! Thanks and sorry so long 26pounds 35 inches 12 to 18 month clothes....P.S. he is on 4 units for two weeks then moves up to 8 then in 2 weeks goes to 12 what are you on? Guest guest
, I'm really sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. We were really worried about that with Abby because she has had a bad time with shots. Mostly when she was so young in the NICU I would be surprised if she remembered it, but since then a couple of times at her regular doctors office when it was just horrible. She hasn't had any other medical problems, it's her twin brother, Sam, who has had to have his eye lanced and gone through hernia surgery. I don't remember how old your son is, but Abby is 6. We've found that letting her participate as much as possible has made her feel more in control. We were going to rotate the shots, but she only wants them in her thighs so thighs is what we are doing. She picks out which stuffed animal she's going to hold, then dials in her doseage, swabs the spot with alcohol. She dries the spot by waving her hand over it and then counts with us while the shot is in. She puts her bandaid on the spot afterwards (she's always loved bandaids so this is great for her). Then she goes to her calendar and puts on her sticker that shows where she got her shot. Also, we tried having both of us there while we do the shots and also only having one of us. She seems much less nervous if it's just one of us so that's what we do. Both of us hovering over her really seemed to make her nervous. I'm not exactly happy about doing it by myself, but if she's more comfortable that's what we will do. I would really prefer my husband do all the shots, but then I would be terrified if I ever had to do them so we take turns - he does four and I do two. About the " pinching " , the pharmacy company sent us needles that are small and the box says on the side " mini needle, no pinch-up required " . It's a 3/16 inch (5mm) length needle, 31 gauge. We asked the nurse about it when we went in for the first shot because she was using a different needle for the training and showing us how to do the pinch up. She said that yes, we really didn't need to do the pinch up with that size needle, but she still felt it might lessen the pain so continued to show it. She said we really didn't have to do it if we didn't want to. It just seemed to add more stress to trying to do the shot to us - pinch up, push in, release, count, etc. We don't do the pinch up and it seems to go easier and still doesn't seem to really cause Abby any pain. Also, the nurse told us with that size needle that you needed to be very careful to make sure and hold it in completely the full amount of time to make sure she gets all the medicine. So far that hasn't seemed to be a problem. I think with Abby it's a control issue. If you can find things that are important to that let him feel more in control then maybe he will be more accepting of it. I'm sure those are different for every child. I know many people say they give the shots at night, but for us we have chosen to do it first thing in the morning and are lucky enough to have the option of doing that. It's over with first thing in the morning, she doesn't have all day to think about it, and it's not associated with something else she enjoys like her bath. I'm not sure what you mean by units. Abby is on 0.50 mg 6 days a week. She is 23 pounds and 38 3/8 " . Sherri Mom to 6 yr old twins - Abby (RSS) and Sam (nonRSS)
