We are pleased to announce an important new job opening at Family Health

International (FHI): Director of Research Utilization. And we hope that you

We are seeking a skilled public health professional with demonstrated

leadership and technical expertise in the field of international

reproductive health, including family planning and HIV/AIDS programs. The

new Director will be working closely with the Vice President of the Field,

Information and Training Services Department (FITS) to establish priorities,

create programmatic strategies and oversee the work of our research

utilization efforts.

Minimum requirements include ten years of progressively responsible

experience in planning, managing and implementing international reproductive

health programs, and an advanced degree in public health, health sciences,

behavioral sciences or a related discipline. The post will be based in

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE Director, Research Utilization

REPORTS TO Vice President, Field, Information

and Training Services (FITS)

BASIC FUNCTIONS

To manage the Research Utilization program of the FITS department, as

directed by the vice president of FITS; to provide technical leadership and

strategy development; to lead FHI's Research to Practice (RtoP) efforts; to

create systems to ensure RtoP implementation; to supervise staff; to

maintain, monitor and provide program and budgetary information; and to

initiate and write proposals for funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. In collaboration with the vice president of FITS, develops and

implements technical and management strategies to meet FITS program needs,

with a special focus on research utilization.

2. Serves as the lead on FHI's RtoP efforts, including all

information dissemination activities. Coordinates closely with all FHI

departments to develop new strategies and refine existing ones for research

utilization. Streamlines processes for setting research priorities and

implementing focused utilization activities.

3. Builds strategic relationships with USAID ating Agencies

and other service delivery organizations to advance research utilization

efforts.

4. Establishes priorities for the Research Utilization program,

with the vice president; creates budgets and monitors expenditures to ensure

efficient, effective marshaling of resources to meet program requirements.

5. Manages all program activities including developing work

plans; ensuring that the most current research findings are integrated into

activities, products and information materials; monitoring implementation

and ensuring that reports are prepared; delegating tasks; and monitoring

assignments. Ensures that Research Utilization staff fulfill work

requirements, and that work expectations are fair and equitable.

6. Supervises Research Utilization staff. Ensures adequate

training and skill development of staff. Coaches staff managers in the

fulfillment of their supervisory responsibilities. Conducts performance

evaluations and monitors unit workload. Provides regular progress reports

on activities to the vice president.

7. Works with the deputy director of Field Programs to ensure

effective communication and coordination with FHI field offices, and with

the deputy director of Information Dissemination to assure appropriate

linkages.

8. Reviews all donor approval documentation, subagreements, and

other FHI documents for planning, implementation, and evaluation; provides

appropriate technical input and advice, when necessary. Monitors

implementation.

9. Initiates contact and follow-up regarding possible funding

sources. Reviews all proposal opportunities and makes decision whether to

pursue. Works with FHI staff to respond to proposals, write reports, and

document programmatic results.

10. Represents FHI to other domestic and overseas agencies; makes

presentations.

11. Reviews current reproductive health literature, attends

in-service education workshops, professional meetings and conferences as

appropriate. Remains current with management and communication tools, such

as the Internet, word processing, and spreadsheets, and other

hardware/software communications and project management tools.

12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Demonstrated leadership and technical expertise in the reproductive health

field.

In-depth knowledge of programs and service delivery relating to family

planning and reproductive health in developing countries.

In-depth knowledge of research results, and research methods and design,

relating to family planning and reproductive health in developing countries.

Ability to manage multiple projects, set realistic priorities, and diagnose

plans for the successful implementation of activities.

Broad knowledge of international project management and personnel

supervision. Experience supervising staff and managing team projects.

Ability to manage change and inspire teamwork.

Demonstrated ability to relate to and coordinate with multidisciplinary and

culturally diverse technical and management staff to assure sound decisions

on program implementation.

Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to develop and maintain

compatibility among project staff, subcontractors, consultants, and

recipients of assistance.

Experience working with USAID and other major donors, and knowledge of their

grants and contracts procedures and regulations. Demonstrated ability to

solicit funding from major donors.

Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

In-depth knowledge of budgeting and budget monitoring.

Sensitivity to cultural differences and understanding of the political and

ethical issues surrounding family planning and reproductive health issues.

Ability to travel internationally and domestically, as needed.

Proficiency in Spanish or French preferred.

MINIMUM RECRUITMENT STANDARDS

Advanced degree in public health, health education, health sciences,

behavioral sciences or related discipline with ten years experience in

planning, management, and program implementation in the field of

international reproductive health, or equivalent combination of education

and experience. Experience must reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities

listed above.

CLASSIFICATION

FHI Grade 10. This position is exempt from Fair Labor Standards Act and

incumbent employees are not eligible to earn overtime compensation.

Child and Family Health Program Development Specialist

East Coast Migrant Head Start Project is a federally funded program serving migrant farm worker children (6 wks. – 5 yrs) in 11 states. Seeking a Child and Family Health Program Development Specialist. Position located in Raleigh, NC, with extensive travel (2-3 times per month for 2-4 days at a time).
