Does anybody have any suggestions as to teaching an Apraxic child to write her letters and numbers? Thanks again for all the posts. Our OT recommended it and gave us some stuff from the program, but honestly I haven't really tried to implement it yet. There is a website www.hwtears.com, but if you look around you might be able to find some free downloads. " My 3 1/2 yr. old son is very disinterested in writing, coloring, etc. I can't say how good it is yet, but I used to be a teacher and like a lot of their activities, like building a " Mat Man. " You can Google the name of the series. Products are sold to anyone, not just schools. I'm going to purchase a few components (like the Mat Man) just to reinforce concepts at home. Have you tried a pencil grip yet? I found a really good one. My son resists using it, but... it has taught him how to hold his pencil correctly! PS I've used the grip on a pen, too. I know I shouldn't let him use a pen all the time, but I have to use something he'll try to write with. Guest guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Share Posted November 29, 2006 Hi Bonnye, My 5 year old son struggles with writing also. What I've found is that multisensory stuff really helps. Making it fun is a big thing! Here are some of the things Nick enjoys; Having the letter " written " on his back or in his hand, putting a pile of shaving cream on a table and " writing " in the cream (probably his FAV!); my hand over his for writing (probably least favorite); making letters with other objects like dried corn glued to paper etc. I also bought him several write on, wipe off books that have mazes, dot to dots, the alphabet, numbers and pictures of trucks to trace. He likes that he can try it and if he makes a mistake he just uses a big felt eraser and it's gone and he can try again. The other thing I have done is to make sure that he can make the shapes that make up the letters and then taught him names of those shapes. Such as /F/ would be: straight line down, then one " arm " (little straight line to the side) at the top and a little " arm " a little farther down. /a/ is a " circle " with a line down the side etc. /B/ is a straight line down with a " bubble " at the top and down and another " bubble " underneath. Using a language and having a visual letter in front of him has helped immensely. Biggest thing is that he has to want to do it. One last thing, if I were you I would have her evaluated for fine motor and GRAPHOMOTOR issues. My sister's son has a severe graphomotor disability but his fine motor is well, fine Because his fine motor wasn't affected they didn't catch the problem until after 4th grade. Sadly by that time there wasn't a lot they could do and now he has to have a lap top with him during all his classes (he's 16) because he really can not write well enough to take class notes. The OT's told my sister if someone had caught it earlier that therapy most likely would have helped. Plus an OT would be able to give you even more suggestions to help her. I hope this helps. At the beginning of the school year, we asked that the school use the system with Josh (8 yo, apraxia, dyspraxia, sensory integration, etc., etc.). His handwriting was atrocious before - could not form any letters really even though he could identify letters by sight. They started using the system with him in late October (nothing like starting right away but....). He works with it with the OT and his classroom teacher. He is now writing several letters - still with a bit of difficulty but they are recognizable letters and are what he says they are! It's also kind of cute - the system, as you noted, starts all letters in the upper left corner. Josh loves to use a Doodle Pro Doodle Board (excellent practice work and saves a lot of trees!) and every time he picks it up, even if only to draw or draw shapes, he automatically now goes to the upper left corner to start! If only the cost were not so high, I'd buy the system for use at home as well! Highly recommend the system and check out the website, it's very helpful. I was at a hurdle with the writing technique and did not know what to do other than pray. I continuously pray for all that are dealing with our special blessings; our children. I pray that we as parents never give up and that we have a peace of mind when it's all said and done.
