Dear Friends and Colleagues:

First of all, I want to thank all of you for the very generous and useful

response to my request of literature about health and mental health of

Mexican immigrants. It is very comforting to testify the high level of

commitment of the members of this e-group to improving the health status of

migrants. There is no question that we are all contributing from our own

posts, to bring health to those who need it.

This time, also for the document that I am preparing, I would like to draw

from your own experience in the health field. It would be very helpful if

you could please send me a list of the five most prevalent health and/or

mental problems (in your practice, health center or hospital as a

practitioner, manager or administrator) that you have identified among

immigrants from Mexico within the following groups: men, women, children,

teenagers, adults and the elderly. Please indicate the geographical area

where your health unit or practice is located.

Once more, I thank you in advance for your very valuable input.

Kindest regards,

Background: I work as a family nurse practitioner in Hayward, California at a primary care clinic for families. About 75% of the patients are Mexican immigrants. I see about 75% adults and 25% children. The clinic is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). I also work 2 days/week at a high school health center.

Here are the general top 5 health complaints:

Elderly: heart disease, MSK pain, depression/nerves, diabetes, vision/hearing problems

Women: heart disease, family planning, abdominal pain, depression/nerves, diabetes

Men: heart disease, diabetes, MSK pain, STIs, dermatology

Teens: family planning, STIs, UTIs, first aid, sports physicals

Children: well-child routine exams (CHDP), fever, vomiting/diarrhea, ear infections, rashes
