Guest guest
I have seen some iron posts over the past few days and have a few questions. I recently got my bloodwork back from the Dr. and my iron level has dropped from a 12.2 to a 9.9 in six months. My PCP's nurse called and told me to take iron pills. Duh.. already knew that but anyway, here are my questions. 1. What iron level is considered anemic? 2. When do you have to get an infusion? I heard these can be painful so I want to avoid them if possible. 3. How much iron should I take to get it up? I have been taking 3 of the Carbonyl tablets from (Vitalady) It says 2 tablets are roughly the same ELEMENTAL Iron as 325mg ferrous sulfate. If I take 3 per day should that bring it up? 4. How long before I feel better? I have been bone weary tired for a couple of months now and figure the iron has been partly to blame. I have been taking it continuously for a week and hope that it doesn't take too long to improve your levels. ?? 5. When should I have my iron re-checked? All of the posts about this have been very helpful and I appreciate any other info anyone has to share with me. R in Nashville
Guest guest
The 3 carbonyls = 75mg elemental iron. A 325mg fe sulfate is usually 65mg elemental. So, slightly more. Still, it might not be enough/right for YOU. Where are your serum iron (reads: IRON) and ferritin? Those kinda round out the picture. However, when to get infusions is when they set 'em up for ya. Usually after you try several oral solutions and some docs do shots first. Where is B12? Protein? Albumin? Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
Last year I was diagnosed as being severely anemic. My doctor called me on the phone right after he got the labs back. He told me that I was to the point of needing infusions, but he wanted to try oral first (he's not big on taking BIG treatment actions...he starts small, and works his way up). Anyway, he put me on ferrous sulfate, 375 mg a day ( " normal " dietary need is about 20 mg.) I did that for a month, and my levels came back up to normal. I don't take anywhere near that amount now. He put me on weekly B12 shots, too, and it helped a lot. I'm not on the B12 shots now.
