Guest guest Posted October 27, 2003 Report Share Posted October 27, 2003 n Sapala, M.D. Passed Away: 10/25/03 Publication Date: 10/28/03 n Sapala, M.D., a retired general surgeon who practiced in both Detroit and Albion, died Saturday, October 25, 2003 following a short illness. He was 88. Dr. Sapala was a graduate of Detroit Northeastern High School, attended undergraduate school at Wayne University and subsequently earned an M. D. degree from the Detroit College of Medicine in 1940. That same year he married ita Brinkman, a special education teacher from Chicago. After 2 years of surgical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit he entered the Army Air Corps and became a flight surgeon for a photo reconnaissance team during the liberation of Italy in World War II. Following completion of his surgical training he joined the staff of Hutzel Hospital in 1949 and remained there until 1979 when he was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery. Dr. Sapala, at age 65, joined his son Dr. Sapala and practiced general and bariatric surgery until his retirement in 1990. He authored or co-authored more than 30 scientific papers and 2 textbook chapters on surgery of the stomach and esophagus. In 1995 he assisted in the development of a prototype for the Sapala-Wood Micropouch Gastric Bypass, a trademarked procedure for the treatment of severe obesity, and one which is now U. S. Patent pending. Dr. Sapala is survived by his three sons: The Honorable F. Sapala, Dr. E. Sapala and Dr. A. Sapala, three daughters-in-law: Carol, , and a; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Borzym, a brother, Mr. Leon Sapala, 8 grandchildren and one great grandson. (Visitation only) will be held at the J. Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, Mi. on Wednesday October 29th and Thursday October 30th from 2:00 4:00 and 6:00 9:00 P.M. (Both days). A special commemorative service celebrating the life of Dr. Sapala will be held for family and friends at the Dearborn Inn, 20301 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn, Michigan () (Sunday) November 23, 2003 from 3:00 5:00 P.M. Memorial donations may be sent to: The American Society for Bariatric Surgery Foundation, 7328 West University Avenue, Suite F, Gainesville, Florida 32607.
