Guest guest
My 8 year old will be visiting a plastic/reconstructive surgeon at the recommendation of her orthodontist (not started in braces yet). I know nothing about this procedure. Is a plastic/reconstr surgeon the person to see? What else do I need to know about this procedure? We're going because her jaw is too small/underdeveloped. Any suggestions and info is appreciated! Thanks!
Guest guest
8 years old is VERY young to be thinking about orthognathic surgery. Make sure you state that concern to every doctor you see about this because nearly all docs won't perform orthognathic surgery on someone who is still growing. That said, most of us go to oral/maxillofacial surgeons for treatment; however, most times an orthodontist and a surgeon work as sort of a tag team in the orthognathic surgery process. So, if your orthodontist actually referred you to this specific surgeon, it may be worth looking into. I think getting a second opinion from an oral/maxillofacial surgeon would probably help bring some additional confidence to all the questions and answers do and will have. My best to you as you begin this journey. > My 8 year old will be visiting a plastic/reconstructive surgeon at > the recommendation of her orthodontist (not started in braces yet). Guest guest
I would want a consultation with a maxillofacial and oral surgeon, as well -- which the plastic and reconstructive person may be, also. That's just me. And maybe to talk with another ortho or two, if such is possible. Eight is very young. I'd think that maybe the growth patterns could be nudged a bit, using such unpleasantries as braces, headgear, a Herbst or something else I've never even heard of -- but I am no doc. Still, if there are things you can do at this point to help direct her growth and give her healthier jaws and joints before damage is done, all the better. Try not to panic. I think the idea that your doc is looking long-term is a good omen. Find out what the options may be, and then get other opinions if you need them. Discuss risks and benefits, talk with your daughter about what she feels she needs and what she's willing to do to help the changes happen -- this is really important, I think -- and figure out where you can and should go from there. That you're seeking help is really the best news. The docs are there to give you their expertise, and the neglected troubles seem to be the ones that give adults the most long-term difficulties. Best, and if I can answer anything specific, I'm here for you and your child. Guest guest
It depends on the person but my friend got something like this done (besides the chin relocation) and the swelling took a good 2 months to look like herself and her nose is still not back to normal (she had the surgery Nov 4, 2003). I had a upper/lower done last June (2003) and my nose is still wide, i don't think it'll be the same. It sucks but I would definately do it again, no question. hope this helps! s > How long does the swelling (and low grade fever) last when they move > upper, lower, expand palate, remove 4 wisdom teeth, and relocate the > chin?
