I had the diabetes and since surgery I have stopped taking the insulin because it would make my sugar plunge so bad that I woke up once so weak that if my fiancee, who is a nurse, hadn't been here I don't know what I would have done. The sugar readings are always normal. I can pretty much eat and an hour later still have normal readings. I cut out the glucophage XR 500mg. that I took four in the p.m. every day. I remember once saying, when I was pre-op that I didn't know If I could stand the idea of taking vitamins every day for the rest of my life...and someone in one of the groups said...well, would you rather take the prescription medicine that could affect your liver and things? The answer was pretty clear. I sleep so much better now also. I have to find another GP though since my doctor I had has moved but I can't wait till on my chart is says... " Diabetes-Cured! Guest guest
I have heard too from people that it happens. I only take Lantus when my glucose reads above 150. That's why I take it only about every third day. It seems for some reason about every three days I will rise above the 150 mark. I was concerned about my sugars getting too low in the night so now I take it in the morning. One of these days I hopefully won't take it anymore at all!!!! THERE WILL BE A PARTY AT MY HOUSE THE DAY THAT HAPPENS!!! EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!!! Guest guest
I am having GBS on Monday morning (day after tomorrow!) IF my blood glucose is under 200. If it is over 200, I will be sent home and have to schedule another date, which may be two more months. It was 222 at the beginning of the week, but has been fine ever since. Stress affects my glucose levels so much. I am going to do everything I possibly can to be right on target Monday morning, even if that means running around the hospital grounds until it is. I have been preparing for this day for over a year. A question for the diabetics in the group: how have you come off your medications and insulin? I take both Humalog and Lantus, plus Glucophage, Actos, Atacand, Prevacol, Zetia, and a few more. The reason that I am having this surgery is to regain my health. But I am concerned about how I will be tapering off all of these prescription drugs. Will I have to visit my primary care physician every week? Please send me and my surgeon a prayer at 9 am on Monday at Baptist Hospital in Miami. > >Reply-To: Gastric_Bypass_Family >To: Gastric_Bypass_Family > >Subject: RE: Diabetes...Pre-Op and Post-Op >Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 18:47:07 -0500 > >I have heard too from people that it happens. Guest guest
JoAnne It depends on what you Dr advises. I went into this taking Lantus, Humalog, Glucophage and Avandia. I am almost 6 weeks post op and now take only 5-10 units of Lantus every few days. Actually 5 days now I haven't needed it at all. Some people I have heard leave the hospital after surgery and don't need any of the medication any longer. It's all very individual. The Dr will give you instructions based on what your sugars are doing after surgery. But you should find that you can cut down on your medications drastically. I personally check in with my PCM once a month just because I want him to be " in the loop " . The surgeon takes care of your surgery and he will also advise on your health problems. But my regular Dr knows me and his input is very valuable to me as well.
