Or have you ever had your brain 'forget' how to swallow? For a second you just

sit there waiting trying to figure out how to do it! Then it comes back. This

is different than having it get 'stuck' halfway down. But scary all the same.

Hi Donna,

No I have not forgotten how to swallow but have

the food to get stuck and it hurts so badly, and

it won't come up or go down, like the esophagus

will not open and close. Is this part of the

fibromyalgia? I have so many things that I hav

never associated with this chronic disease.

Joy,

I have never associated this with the Fibro, but I think now that it is part of

it. Since I got on this list and others I have discovered that many, many,

things I go through are all tied to this nasty dis-ease. I just never thought

about it before and sometimes thought I was just

'weird' or strange and all alone with it. I bet there is so much that doctors

who do specialize in FMS do not even know about. I guess it's our job to

enlighten them huh? It is comforting to know others are going through the same

thing.

Actually there is. It is not very pleasant. It is really to check and make

sure that you have an opening there. I am sorry, I know the words but they

just will not come. I had it done as when I am having a panic or anxiety

attack, I feel like I can't swallow. The doctor puts something that is

manufactured for this purpose all the way down your throat. I do not have

anything that would keep me from swallowing except myself.

Hi, yes, that is exactly how I would describe it--forgetting how to

swallow; and the more I think about it, the worse it gets, and when

it starts, I can't stop it. Usually, it happens in some embarrassing

public place such as restaurants. You should see how teeny I start

cutting the meat. I have never mentioned this to anyone because it

seemed so weird. I thought it might be due to wine with food, but I

have cut the wine out alltogether because it just makes me feel bad

in general, and even without wine, I still have this problem. It

makes me feel very panicky, like I will choke if I try to swallow.

Geez, I see that I am not alone. Barbara

Barbra,

You explained it perfectly! Yes, I used to think it was because I took muscle

relaxants. So I quit taking them but still had the problem. I eventually went

back to taking them again. I especially have the problem in restaurants, don't

know why but I do. I know what you're saying about cutting food up in teeny

tiny bits. I told my husband I felt like a child or old person and that when I

did get old I would probably have to have my food pureed!

Yes, that would be a swallowing problem. Things you swallow should

Oh boy. Unless you're an astronaut, that's more than a swallowing

problem... Most people find a way to get right side up before they

try to eat something.

Maybe you need to paint arrows on the walls... ^^^ This side UP ^^^

Is this a similar or related " swallowing " thing. When I am eating it feels

like there is some food in the upper part of my throat. It is most

noticeable after eating. I have no problems with water, occassionally a

medicine will get stuck, but I think that is just dry throat. If I feel

this, then take another forkful of food, it seems to push the other down, and

the feeling may or may not be there?

I'm interested in following the string on this. I frequently have the

feeling that there is food stuck in the upper part of my throat, but nothing

will dislodge it. Likewise with pills. (This part is a little gross...

sorry) When I was pregnant and sick all the time, whatever felt like it had

gotten stuck last would be the first to pop out (before stomach contents).

I often wonder if I had some kind of pocket in my throat that's catching

things, which would explain why I can't dislodge them.

Anyone else?
