My husband and I wanted to take our kids to the zoo before school started but I can't go cause I know I'll never be able to walk it. For places like the zoo, Disneyland, etc you can always rent an electric scooter for the day. I tried one first before buying a small Pride Go-Go scooter for myself. Just hauled it in my car to the mall today for back-to-school shopping! My insurance wouldn't consider any sort of scooter or chair for me because they knew if my hip was eventually replaced, I should be fine again....however then they fought me for years over replacing the hip and I was hurting like heck trying to walk! So I forked over $900 myself for that scooter, which has been the best $$ I ever spent. Since I bought mine, I've seen them on Ebay even for as little as $300 brand new, so check online. The scooters are often less weight than the chairs. Mine comes apart in 4 pieces which easily fit in the under-shelf spot in my PT Cruiser. But if my son or hubby is with me, we just lift it up in one piece and it fits nicely with one of the back seats down. Liza
Guest guest
I have been having alot of trouble walking lately. My legs just don't seem to want to work. If I go to the grocery store for shopping I can only last maybe 10 minutes. Then my legs seem to turn to jelly and want to crumble beneath me. This has been going on for several months now. I was going to PT but had to stop because of the Arterial Venous Malformation in my lower spine. They said they don't want me doing PT till they figure out what they are going to do about this. I did find out that it's really an anurism I have but I guess it's to close to the spinal cord. Anyways.....For you that have Wheel chairs. How hard was it to get one? I mean did your doc have to request one for you or can you just get one? Did your doctors tell you that you needed to get one? My husband and I wanted to take our kids to the zoo before school started but I can't go cause I know I'll never be able to walk it. Even with lots of stoping to rest, I'll never make it. Any info or advice? HUGGLES, Grace
Guest guest
Sorry....another question. For you that have Wheel chairs. How hard was it to get one? Grace - you have to have an MD prescription for a wheel chair. Who ever you go to for the w/c fitting should handle all the paperwork, insurance claims, etc. It should be fit to YOU and you get what you need on the w/c to help you with activities of daily living (ADL's). I know that Aase Marit has an I-Glide which I got to try at Buffalo. It has a small motor to assist with the manual pushing. If you have any problems with shoulders/arms, you might want to get an electric w/c. The only problem with an electric w/c is that they can be BIG and heavy! If you put I-Glide in google, you should come up with the manufacturer. has a manual chair custome fit to her (and I can fit in it also) when she had a non-cancerous tumor removed 2x's from the bottom of her foot. We also have an electric w/c that I inherited from my FIL (he died from Lou Gehrig's Disease). Unfortunately, we don't have a vehicle big enough to put the electric w/c in, but so far (knock on wood) we haven't needed it. I did use it after my 1st operation (hernia repair). Good luck!
