Guest guest
Hang in there Chris. At least you have US television. I had British television and it got to be a bit much. :-) This is a hell of an operation, and it only really struck me when I saw the incision for the first time - 44 stitches and all of about 11 inches. I only joined this group several months after my first one. It gets better. Guest guest
Hi Gang, One week ago today I got my C+ installed at JRI. I am sorer than I thought I would be. Did'nt need pain or sleep drugs last night, but I woke up alot. One time I woke up sweating like a pig....but no fever. Anyone else have night sweats folling resurfacing? I'm a little discouraged at my recovery, I really don't feel like I'm much better than day one, even thouhg I know I am cuz I can move my leg without using my hands etc.. I called bi-laterel Steve from Colorado yesterday, his second day following surgery, and he is in good spirits. He's doiing better mentally with a bi-lateral than I did with my one sider. Every one is different I guess. I just keep fearing that mine will be the one that doesn't work out for some reason... Anyway, I'm trying to stay busy so that my head can't mess with me as bad. Guest guest
Hi Chris I am six weeks post my second resurfacing (day 42 today!!). Each of our experiences are different but yours sounds familiar. I had massive sweats in weeks two, three and four that soaked me and the bed each night but they have stopped. Sleep, in any quantity, still eludes me - the pattern being two (ish) hours, then a gap, then two more, then a 2 hour (ish) gap, then snoozing whilst tossing about. Alcohol seems to worsen it!!!! I decided not to take sleeping pills post op. I have had two good nights in the six weeks and I hold on to that memory tenderly.....as I know it will return to normal. It did for the first resurfacing at about 12 weeks. You sound in great form for 8 days post-op......I found weeks two and three especially frustrating (as many on this board have). Practicing 'chilling out' and just pacing each day as it comes might be a good strategy for you. It may be a slow few weeks ahead!! All the best. ine April 2003, March 2003 > Hi Gang, > One week ago today I got my C+ installed at JRI. I am sorer than > I thought I would be. Guest guest
Hi Chris. You are about in the same time frame that I am in. I had my right hip resurfaced By Dr. Geoss on the 14th of April. I do feel stronger each day and I get around real well with 2 crutches but it seems like its going to be a while before I can use a cane or one crutch. People have told me all of a sudden things just take off. I am still waiting for this too. Patience has never been one of my best traits. Best of luck. Guest guest
Hi Here's one for you to ponder................ while I never for one moment ever thought mine may go wrong at the start, I do from time to time these days catch myself going down the road of horrors about what if I lose it now.................After finally getting some freedom after 35 years of no hip this just doesn't bear thinking about and I have to really watch myself........... I suspect us folk who like to worry and fret need something more than bad TV to help us deal with mental speculation fright.......... My guess is people who have heart valves and a range of other implant stuff have similiar fears...........so it is something else to learn to deal with for a more peaceful life..............well that is what I tell myself........... But glad to hear you are still hanging in there............. the body does take time to get over the major trauma that has just been dealt to it, cutting, sawing rah rah.......... and the added extras of mind altering chemicals........... Guest guest
Kurt You mention that Dr. Gross did your surgery. Which hospital does he work out of? I''ve been to www.grossortho.com but there are a number of hospitals he is affiliated with. I am sending x-rays to him this week and I'd like to get as much info as possible from someone who's had surgery with him. Thanks. Re: Day 8... Hi Chris. Guest guest
Joyce Hope things are going well. I am sending x-rays to Dr. Gross this week and am trying to get as much information as possible. My situation is a difficult one, since my femur is pretty deformed. I am considering Dr. Gross or DeSmet. Just wondering if you could give some input regarding expectations...treatment...any insurance coverage...amount of time you spent in surgery, hospital, etc. I'd be traveling by plane so I'd be interested in understanding how long I could expect to be there before returning home. Thanks and good luck in your recovery. Re: Day 8... Day 8... Hi Gang, One week ago today I got my C+ installed at JRI. I am sorer than I thought I would be. Guest guest
Hi, . You don't say how your femur is deformed, but the docs will tell you if you're a candidate for resurf. My surgeon, of course, was Dr Gross and if he says he can't do the procedure -- then the folks on this post say that Dr DeSmet is the one to talk to since he walks where others fear to tread. IF, however, Dr Gross becomes your surgeon then I encourage you to visit his website: www.grossortho.com He does surgery on Mondays and Wednesdays. I had mine on a Monday. So I had to meet with him on Friday and then check into the hospital very early on Monday morning. I was in the hospital until Wednesday afternoon. I have relatives in Columbia and I stayed there until the following Monday, and then rode home -- which was about an 8 hr drive. I don't remember a thing about the recovery room (or even if I was in a recovery room). I was on a morphine drip until Wed morning -- my epidural didn't work so I had general anesthetic. Dr Gross uses sub-q sutures with steri-strips on the surface to close the incision. My " scar " is pencil thin and 6 " long. I was up walking with 2 crutches by the second day. I even practiced going up and down stairs. I had absolutely no joint pain post-op. There was some minor " pain " with the incision site and Tylenol took care of that. As I've posted here before, I felt fragile once I was discharged. The fears of doing something wrong and messing up the procedure. I had insomnia for close to 6 weeks. And I had the rare occurrence of a reaction to morphine -- which gave me a huge panic attack several days post-op. (That was a real treat.) All of that has passed. And I am now nearly 3 months post-op and am driving a stick-shift car, bounding up stairs, mowing my lawn, and working on stretching out all of those muscles that got messed up from guarding against the pain of OA. Dr. Gross's office handled all of the insurance claims -- in fact, they told me to LET them handle it. My insurance, United Health Care, covered it as an " out of network " provider. So I've had some costs. But UHC covered the vast majority of the cost. I'm at the place now where, except for the tight muscles, I forget that I have a hip implant. It feels fine. It works just like a hip joint is supposed to work. I have to remind myself to not push beyond what is recommended -- ie., not to squat down or lift really heavy loads, etc. Hope this info is helpful. Best, Joyce (Dr Gross, LHR, 2/2/04)

Guest guest
: My femur was pretty badly deformed as well - due to Legg Calve Perthes when I was 11. The top looked more like a mushroom than a ball. Dr. Gross said he didn't have any problem with it. Dr. Gross operates on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Typical hospital stay is three days. We drove (about 8 hours) but he said it wouldn't be any problem to fly. My surgery was on a Wednesday and I was released early (before 10 am) on Saturday. Actually, he would have released me Friday afternoon but we didn't want to drive 8 hours in the dark. Apparently he commonly does " early release " if you are not having any problems. Dr. Gross typically quotes about 2 hours for the surgery, I think mine was a little less. I was the second surgery that day - I went into the OR around 10 am. He typically does 5 a day using 2 ORs - alternating back and forth between them. It appears that most patients are allowed to be full weight bearing immediately - he told me to listen to my body and if it hurt to back off a little. I am at 4 weeks as of Wednesday and I have walked 9 miles this week using just a cane which I only really need when I start getting tired. I plan to walk at least 2 more today. Dr. Gross did not use staples or sutures on the final closure. Apparently he uses some kind of adhesive along with tape strips. They gave me special dressings that were waterproof (Tegaderm Plus) so I was able to take a shower on day 2 and every day since. The incision is almost completely healed but there is still quite a visible ridge. I have only this week found it comfortable enough to sleep on that side for a while. I am still getting all the bills and statements so I can't tell you the whole story but I did get his bill for the surgery and my insurance paid all but $300 of a total that was near $6000. I would be happy to try and answer any other questions you may have. Also, Dr. Gross's nurse, Lee Webb, is fantastic. Any questions we hippies can't answer - I'm sure she can. Guest guest
I am 7 weeks post op at JRI. First week or two, I had fevers and there was a tiny hole where they had the drainage stint, which would not entirely close up. Liquid would constantly dribble out of the hole and soak whatever I was wearing. All that went away and it took about 6 weeks to really start feeling better. I am using a cane, but can move around pretty good and was able to take stairs normally today. My other leg, which I did not have operated, is actually feeling much worse than the operated leg. It was also around week 5 or 6 where I could sleep normally and lay on my operated side if I felt like it. > Hi Gang, > One week ago today I got my C+ installed at JRI. Guest guest
Hi , I'm another Dr. Gross alum. I second everything Joyce said. Dr. Gross and his people are the very best! Let them handle the insurance! My surgery was done at Providence Northeast. I live in Iowa and have traveled to SC because it is worth it. Please feel free to email me directly if you wish.
