When I was leaving Belgium, Marc, the physical therapist who works with Dr De

Smet, gave me a list of physical therapy exercises I ought to be doing when I

returned home. Somehow I misplaced that list. Does anyone have a copy of it?

I

would really appreciate it. Thank you all.

Mark (St. Pete, FL.)

Would love to see this list, also

Hey kids...

The generosity is nice -- and typical, it seems of surface hippies --

but wouldn't it be just as easy to e-mail Dr. de Smet's office and

ask for a copy of the pt's exercise instructions?

Just a thought.

Exercise information follows:

POSTOPERATIVE EXERCISES B.H.R.

1.Laying on your back.

* Static contractions of the quadriceps ( making an extension of the

knee - hold for 5 seconds)

* Active mobilization of the foot

* Active elevation from the operated leg, with STRAIGHT knee

* Active abduction from the operated leg, on a plastic bag. Don't

cross the midline!

* Combined active flextion from the hip and knee and make an

extension against resistance

* Stretching from the hip, with the lower part of your leg bending

over the bed (this is where you lie on your back with legs

unsupported by the bed and your groin says " ouch " )

2. Sitting Up

* Active extension from your knee with resistance

3. In upright position, holding the door post

* Active abduction of the operated leg ad hold for 3 seconds

4. With your back to the wall

* Active retoversion of the pelvis

5. With your face to the wall

* Make full contact with your feet on the floor as to make an

extension of the hip and knee.

6. Recommendations for walking

* Don't turn around on your operated leg

* Take care of the length of your step

* Don't forget the metronome:

ONE-TWO

ONE-TWO

ONE=TWO

Verbal additions:

1. cat stretch

2. Good leg forward, operated leg with foot flat on floor, back =

push hips forward to stretch both groin and hamstring.

From a local physiotherapist here, because I am having some trouble

getting rid of the limp which has been with m for 5 years (I am only

in my 5th week)

Lie on bed on good leg. Make the operated leg long, so pelvis

tilts. Lift operated leg an hold. Repeat. This is to strengthen one

of the muscles that stops the hip flopping around when you walk. He

says I have a model walk, like on the catwalk. Not good for a guy!

Stand on thick phone book with the operated leg. Make good leg long,

keeping operated leg knee straight. This tilts pelvis up and down. I

my case he is trying to cure a pelvis which has become permanently

tilted since it took 7 years from my first pain to time of diagnosis.
