That's GREAT Liza! I have a very understanding instructor who

relies on me for remembering the forms and one steps - he

concentrates on sparring. It works! :) Thanks Liza!

I had picked this studio/instructor origianlly because she was the ONLY one

who could tolerate my son in class . Picture a short, brawny 5 year old who

wanted to be a Ninja Turtle, with Tourette's and ADHD. He'd try to do a few

preliminary stances and punches with the class, but soon he'd be circling the

room, making airplane noises and hitting the walls. She'd patiently direct his

attention to something new, keep him focused for another 1-5 minutes....and

allow him to make a few more room circles to blow off steam. If she got 7

minutes of actual work out of a 50 minute class, she was pleased.

Meanwhile, 3 year old sister would be intently watching me in class doing

katas. When she was 5, she already knew the 5 basic katas and all the

warm-ups. Took me 6 years to earn my Black Belt....she did it in 4. Won

numerous

tournaments over kids twice her size & age. Got Sempai title, has the hours for

Sensei...but the rules say she can't officially have it till she's 16.

We stuck around for 3 more years till the brother who dragged us into

all this finally earned his! Along the way, he became THE go-to kid to give

private sessions to other ADHD kids....one of which turned out to have HEDS

also.

& would have " pretzel " contests to see how extreme they could

wrap limbs over limbs. finally also gave up karate due to increasing

joint pain, but is now doing very well in swimming! He's now 14....but looks

about 8. It's VERY wierd hearing a deep male teen voice also coming out of his

" young " body! Amazing who you meet along the way with your own conditions!

Liza, we have 2-3 students like this! They are always given to me

to teach, as I have the most patience. The other instructors are

men, so I guess it's the 'mother' instinct in me. Anyway, you can't

imagine the pride it brings to see someone with these types of

problems suceed! One of the boys has tested 4 times to the level of

lime belt so far. I'm so proud of him! :) I think it helps kids

to focus and have self confidence and pride.

Yep, that was us, LOL.....she was trying to " pretend " she didn't get anything

he was teaching, LOL.....but he figured her out anyways & made her an

" example " of how when you think you know, you don't always! I know we didn't

have

the same training, style or techniques that he did, but our instructor was a

saint for working with the kids that no " regular " programs would accept.
