Guest guest
Hi Anton, My suggestion would be take to the water and see if you can strengthen up the muscles a little more.......... This may help with protecting the joint a little/so less pain until the op and serve to make recovery a little easier......... I also used a little electric blanket/hot pack thingo for years to help ease pain at night.......... still do............ I have saved taking pills with that for years........... you may even see if you can tolerate a bit of valium rather than pain killers....... It is good for relaxing the muscles and in that short period with caution you shouldn't end up addicted.......... Edith > Any suggestions beyond ibuprofen? Guest guest
Given that it is hard to find things in the archive, reposting my own posts from 2003 ...try SAMe http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,818,00.html and/ or a google search on S-adenosylmethionine (since searching on SAMe isn't useful ..) artifex, LBHR McMinn Nov 2002 > Any suggestions beyond ibuprofen? Guest guest
Anton, See ya in Belgium in Late September. Did De Smet ask you to stop taking the ibuprofen now before your surgery too? Whats the deal with that? Why does he want us to stop taking it. As I said earlier, I take 15 to 20 a day for pain. Hope I can deal without it. Hey Anton do you think we will be able to listen to Rush in Ghent? > Any suggestions beyond ibuprofen? Guest guest
Hi Berkeley boy! I used to live in Berkeley 1981-85! I think it was much more interesting back in the " hippy days " . Anyway, have you tried any other NSAIDs like Voltaren? You'll have to stop it about 2 weeks prior to surgery, but this seemed to be the best NSAID for me. Also, I'm allergic to them but many say that Bextra and Celebrex are very effective. I can't sleep anymore and I have some Demerol but all narcotics make me nauseated. I may just try it with an anti-emetic so I can at least get one or 2 good night's sleep per week. Of course I'd never recommend this for day time. You must have some acupuncturists (this may really help) or alternative med folks in Berkeley who could do theraputic touch (actually Not touching, just massaging your " aura " ) but I don't think this is too useful. I have my surgery in less than a month and I'm actually beginning to look forward to it to be done with this pain. Happy hobbling, Marie > Any suggestions beyond ibuprofen? Guest guest
Yeah I'm not surprised there are more people with an (un)healthy like for the sweet, not-admitting-you-like-it-in-public sound of Rush. Heh! No, I haven't been instructed yet to stop taking ibuprofen, but I haven't made it past 1600mg a day (8) and can manage less if necessary. I think there's some component of the anti-inflammatory nature of ibuprofen that's bad for surgery, or pro-bleeding, or something. They gave me Vicodin early, and being a big boy (240+) I found that I have to take so much to stop the pain that I am completely stupid, so that's out. It's the shooting pain that does it. I have a lot of referred pain in the knee, which also took a good hit vs. the truck. No real damage though. Soldier on. Meh. Right now I do 20 min on the elliptical trainer and try to keep my hr at 150+ for 10 of those 20 min, and then do 30 laps of the pool in about 40 min. I mix backstroke and bastard-butterfly, and am usually suitably tired. I've only been doing this routine for a couple months, and I'd put on about 20 pounds in the last 18 months post-accident. I underestimated the power of all those bike rides I used to take, and the dirt bike cross-training. Can't wait for the day I can do good size jumps and not be afraid of breaking into a million pieces. -Anton LBHR de Smet 9/28/04 > Anton, > > See ya in Belgium in Late September. Guest guest
De Smet and some of the other european docs believe that in fact the NSAIDS increase the rate of degeneration in the joint. I tend to agree because my hip went very fast after I started taking the stronger ones. Won't be doing that again. Pam > > Any suggestions beyond ibuprofen? Last week I was hearing from people that thought the steroid cortizone accelerated the decay. Now I hear that at least one accomplished doctor thinks that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can damage hips. Can anyone provide some perspective on sterioidal vs. non-steroidal anti-inflammatories? Thanks much, Cannon

Guest guest
Pam's right! There's published papers supporting this. I read them early in my adventure and conversely - my early AVN was halted and the bone has continued to improve (but alas the cartilage is gone and isn't coming back). The moral is - all of you out there should find another way to deal with the pain. NSAID's are not good. Acetominaphen doesn't have the same problems so far as I know, but it's bad on the liver if you take it habitually. I stick with cod liver oil and glucosamine sulfate. They work well. Guest guest
DeSmet wants you to stop ibuprofen because it is an NSAID, and he has seen that the effect of these is to further soften the bone. Tylenol or Vicodin is ok to take, just ask him. Mobic, celebrex and the like fit into this category also. Isara RBHR 7-3-02 > > > Anton, > > > > > > See ya in Belgium in Late September.
