Guest guest
hi Ted, i don't blame you for not wanting to wait for surgery in Vancouver. I am 7 months into a 9-12 months waiting list for Dr. Greidanus at VGH. I was asked to call the office in Sept. for a surgery date. However , I have now been told that the same waiting list is 18-24 months!! This is really frustrating! How can a waiting list get so much longer?? What if I call up at 18 months and the waiting list is 24-36 months! I am now seriously considering alternatives... especially Belgium and Dr. K. DeSmet. Did anyone work out how much this would cost in Canadian dollars? (Pacific Blue Cross Insurance said they would only pay for out of province or out of country surgery if it was an emergency ie car accident, not a pre-existing condition). In answer to your question about England , I am also English, and have heard that they are alleviating their waiting lists by sending hip patients to private clinics in France, to be covered by NHS! Now, there's an idea. Keep in touch. Irene England or Montreal I do not want to wait too long in Vancouver. How long is the wait list in England? Is Dr. McMinn too busy now also? Which other doctors in England have done a lot of BHRs? How do I contact them? I have been convinced by reading posts here that it is better not to wait too long although so many Orthos tell you to wait until it is absolutely necessary. I also now am convinced that it is not the prosthesis used but the skill and experience of the surgeon. My Ortho has only done 6 in 3 years! I have sent my newest digital Xrays on CD to Dr. u in Montreal who has done 20 since Feb. 2004. If I cannot get an early enough date with him, I am considering England as an alternative because my wife used to live there and we would like to return there if necessary. Thanks for any assistance. Also if reads this, would he please email me to relate whether he has received my last 3 responses to him.
Guest guest
>Hi Ted, The typical wait on the NHS in England is about 9 months but this can be less depending on where you live. There are no waits for private surgery, but of course you have to pay in the region of £8000 or so, unless your insurance company will pay. I have just had mine done in Nottingham 5 weeks ago, and it is fantastic!I only found out about the extent of my problems at the end of April and I had my surgery just six weeks later. There are many surgeons with 100s of resurfacings under their belt in the UK. Mine had done over 150 and actually teaches others to do the surgery in Birmingham. If you decide to come to the UK just ask on this site and I am sure you will get several recommendations from people who had Uk surgery besides the Birmingham two! Guest guest
I corresponded with Dr.McMinn. In the same office there is also a Mr.O'Hara who worked with McMinn. I ended up with de Smet because of the lower cost and all the incredible referrals on this site. While in Belgium, I met oneo of his patients who is 75 and had one hip done in May and the other in July. Not many surgeons will even consider a person of that age. Good luck with your decision > >Hi Ted, > > The typical wait on the NHS in England is about 9 months but this > can be less depending on where you live. Guest guest
I guess you mean Maxine - in fact there aren't many 76 year olds like her... I am anxiously awaiting her return to Vancouver to check out her scars and I know her physio wants to hit tennis balls with her. Glad to hear that your trip to visit the Ghent god went so well. I wonder how many of Canadians have gone over now - we were his second and third back in 2002.... If only the Canadian government/medical system realized just how many people are travelling to Europe for surgery then they might actually realize just how bad the waitlists are. anyway welcome to the other side... ain't life grand. Guest guest
I thonk they know very well what the wait times are and they rely in suckers like me to save them money. I have been trying to get MSP to fund me what they would have to pay out for a Canadian operation, but so far no luck. Would be interested in participating in a class action suit if I could find enough company. Yes - it was Maxine - she was going to visit her offspring in Europe before coming back. I have her email address somewhere and will be contacting her.
