Morag, I'm another who woke up (six times during the first and four during the second) during surgery. I felt as awake and alert, and well-rested as if I had just woken up from a good nights sleep. Even better than that though, when I woke up, I was in no pain (after all, they did use spinal anesthesia), and there was absolutely no terror at all about waking up. I realized at the time that they were still operating, heard the saws etc, and was perfectly happy to comment on the proceedings at hand. The anesthesiologist said beforehand that they like to have you " just " under, which is apparently quite a fine line in my case. Other anesthesiologists want to be sure you are soundly asleep, and you don't know anything until you wake up in recovery. I guess you could specifically state that you really don't want to wake up at all, but I found it quite interesting. But then I also asked to watch ;-).
