Progesterone enhances the effects of thyroid hormone and in some people this does contribute to hyperthryoidism. Your low TSH confirms that you're hyperthryoid; TSH is a pituitary hormone that regulates thryoid hormone levels. T4 is a hormone but the total T4 test can be falsely high or low because of changes in binding proteins. A test for Free T4 and Free T3 would tell you how high your thryoid levels are. I've been devouring your website:-) About the projesterone cream...the goiter developed first. I had been having perimenopausal symptoms (I'm 43, my Mom started getting hot flashes at my age too). Now I know that Graves disease makes you feel hot all the time. But I don't feel hot all the time, only in the morning when I first wake up. The natural progesterone cream took care of the hot flashes. I didn't get them anymore. I was only on it for a couple weeks and it worked the 2nd or 3rd day of being on it which to me was like a miracle. But I stopped it when I found out I was hyperthyroid...which is why I was askign about it. I may go back to using it again tho (undecided, sure would be nice:-) I am canceling the thyroid uptake scan. Its really been bothering me alot because first I know he ordered the wrong blood test cause everyone here seems to get the other kind with the Free T3 & 4 --and I know all the books say that is the right one. I think the reason he orders that outdated blood test is because of the lab has me going to. He gave me the order for the blood test and it tells on the order form all the types of blood tests they run there. Free T3 and T4 isn't even listed. Just TSH and T4. My Mom has been talking to a friend of hers that has thyroid problems and my Mom got me the name of an endo to see. He's supposed to be " fantastic. " I'm gonna get an appt. with him. I think my whole family is gonna disown me before this is over, LOL I'm driving everybody completely nuts with this. To them it seems like I'm going back and forth. But I'm really not, I'm only just learning everything and more things are coming to light. Like your email:-) My Dr. would like to believe that if I don't do what he says now, something horrible is gonna happen. I'm not putting it off. I just want a better doctor. And luckily my Mom came up with someone. >>>And... don't give up hope that this is temporary thyroiditis - you have no idea if it's autoimmune yet since your doc didn't run antibodies. Most MDs would have no idea about herbal remedies. You could always consult with a good naturopath to find out what would work for you with your asthma. I also would not be surprised if the progesterone cream had something to do with this - maybe you should stop that and see if things improve? Of course if you were thinking you needed progesterone cream for something, perhaps there were hormone issues going on and the cream just made everything more obvious... And finally, not to stress you out, but I would cancel that uptake scan and insist on the antibody testing and a thyroid ultrasound instead. The uptake scan is outdated and not necessary for diagnosis. Just remember it's your body and no one can make you do anything that you don't want. And don't let anyone rush you into any decisions. And... don't give up hope that this is temporary thyroiditis - you have no idea if it's autoimmune yet since your doc didn't run antibodies.
